I just installed xp pro with sp2 on a toshiba satellite 1410 laptop. I have
downloaded the official drivers from toshiba.com.au but they don't work at
all (after reboot it defaults back to the 4bit VGA), so I am using the xp
drivers (nv4_disp.dll). This works well except that there is a 1inch gap on
the right of the screen that isn't being used. The resolution is 1024x768 and
when i move my mouse to the right edge it scrolls the screen over. I know
that part of the screen works because when it boots there is writing right up
to the edge. I have tried 800x600 and it does the same thing.

Any ideas?

Find out what brand video hardware your computer has installed, go to their
website and download the latest driver for Windows XP.

You are not kidding!
Yesterday Miucrosoft updated my laptop and ruined my display, today I took
it to the service, technician tried to find a driver (ATI display driver for
Sony laptop) he could not find. According to what he says that Microsoft
outpaces the market with with updates and others have to catch-up with them.
I am pretty much pissed these idiots ruined my display, if anyone can give me
an idea I'd appreciate too.

My card is an nVidia GeForce4 420 Go. This is my last resort. I have tried
downloading every driver I can find for it. I tried nVidia, Toshiba, and a
bunch of driver websites. I don't know what else to try. Something else I did
notice was that if the screen went to sleep and I woke it up again everything
was fine and the screen was full size.

I found a solution. I went to the American website (confusing to work
through) and found the display driver there. It was .02Mb larger than the
Australian one and it was called exactly the same version. Go figure. I tried
it and it works. No more problems...
