Search facility won't open!

I click on 'start' and then on 'search'. Nothing happens - it simply doesn't
open. Please can someone help me?

Sorry - I should have added that I have Windows XP home edition

I've had this problem several times over the years. This time it occurred after installing Micrographx Picture Publisher 10. I tried a system restore to the day after installation- no luck. Then I uninstalled PP10 and voila! I now have a search window again.
