How can I see the real throughput speed of my pc adapter and router.?
I do see my Connection Speed within "Wireless Network Connection Status"
(winXP), but this must be a pie in the sky bit rate and not real world.

I guess you are talking about lan speed and not internet speed...... DuMeter
will show speed across a network as well as internet speed. There are also
is a freeware version that is just like DuMeter but I can't remember the
name. The max I get on my wireless G network is around 20-22 Mbps. If I
remember correctly thats the max speed I also got with a wired network. I
guess that shows the limitations of the computer. So with my results
802.11g should handle two people transfering at max speed before it starts
to becomes the bottleneck when a 3rd person would transfer data. My
transfer speeds have seemed to vary though and I noticed I got the faster
transfer speed when transfering a big compressed file.

The best tool (and easiest/free'st) that I have found has been TTCP

linux version at http://www.ccci.com/tools/ttcp/

I think your assumptions are a little bit off. Wireless is like a hub
and the more users you add the slower the overall throughput becomes.
This is due to the number of collisions etc. If you get 22Mbps with
one client you will get less with two clients from the access point.

As far as the transfer speed with a large file that would be correct.
A large file should be sending all the ip packets at the max size and
the % of overhead gets reduced. Less ACK packets and ip headers as a %
of the total should increase throughput.

Also depends on distance. I'm connected to an 802.11b AP which is ~300
meters away. The AP is connected to a 600Mbps optical backbone so my
Internet speed is limited to the wireless connection performance. The
link caps out at 4,5Mbps (theoreticaly 802.11b is 11Mbps). When I'm next
to the AP max speed of 7Mbps.
