Hi,
it's a well known fact that the Quadro series of iceo cards from Nvidia get a lower 3D Mark score- but why? Shouldn't it be the opposite; isn't teh Quadro series at its full potential?

Sombody will undoubtedly explain it better than me, but I believe the Quadro drivers redistribute some of the resources of the card itself to boost OpenGL at the expense of D3D.

Ah. So then a Quadro is better in OpenGL? Cool. What I try to use always in games. Why is it that so many new games don't use it though? It's so powerful.

D3D is more efficient, you can run D3D games on an old Riva TNT card with respectable framerates at 640x480x16, while to do that with Open GL would require much more graphics power (more transitors, more money). Same thing with newer cards at 1600x1200x32. I don't think any of my cards are powerfull enough to do good framerates in OpenGL at that resulution/color depth.

Would that still hold true under win2k? I have heard that d3d isn't very good there (I have it, but you don't really go below 30FPS w/ a Quadro DCC). On an older card would it be worth it to run in OpenGL if under win2k? Also, if D3D is more efficient, why idn't it used for professional apps as well- all pro cards are OpenGL specific.

isnt OpenGL was used most by 3DFX, and the main reson Nvidia had to buy 3DFX?

Glide, a simplified spinoff of OpenGL, was used by 3DFX. I think nVidia bought it to keep VIA from getting it, just like Creative bought out Aureal to keep Guilemot from getting it (in Creative's case, they actually said "add $100,000 to whatever Guilemot offers" so they could kill the technology).
