Hi all
While trying to enjoy my recent purchase of a top-loading NES
to the fullest, I've been looking into modding it in order to
correct its two main flaws: the vertical lines and the lack of
A/V ports.
Now, the lines are apparently caused by improper video decoupling,
according to this FAQ:
The person who made the TriStar fix did it with a capacitor, but this
article suggests it won't be as easy with a toploading NES. I've
wondered
if something could be built into the a/v mod, but that's probably
wishful thinking too. What it DOES say is that you could solve
the problem by replacing the PPU from the standard NES, though it
seems that's not considered feasible.
Seriously, what would it take to do that? Could it really be done?
Is the PPU so integrated into the system that it can't be removed or
swapped? And if so, what about the PPU off of an A/V famicom? Could
that work?
I'm hoping there are still a few NES gurus out there who can venture
a guess on this one. On one hand, I like to think that nothing is
impossible if you put your mind to it. On the other hand, I get this
nagging suspicion that if this were fixable, someone would have fixed
it already.
