IE logoff freezes pointer

Hi all. Im new here. I helped a friend format his HD over the weekend. We reinstalled windows98 and all the drivers except the video and everything was working fine. After installing the video driver a glich showed up. When he clicks on the log off button after closing Internet Explorer, the mouse pointer freezes. The mouse still functions as you can see by moving the mouse in the general area of the start button and it will highlite and open if clicked. Navigating using tab and arrow keys I restarted IE and the pointer springs back to life! Why does it leave this pointer artifact on the screen when hitting the disconect button? I don't know his exact specs but I'll do my best here:
PIII 500mz
128 SDRAM pc100
generic geforce2 mx AGP card (Got it at Frys, drivers seem to be standard det 3, no manufacturer software included)
motorola modem
ESS Maestro sound.

No device conflicts are showing and all drivers are current where possible.

Is he using the new NED's? Is there a way that you can find the video card's manufacturer? Try using the hardware pointers instead of software pointers. If using hardware pointers, try software pointers.

Hmm. Been to DG.com got a couple of drivers there for mouse and monitor. I was not aware you could switch pointers between hardware/software. How is this done? Sounds like it could help.

Start/settings/control panel/mouse/pointers tab/scheme <none> for hardware, anything else listed would be software.
