Can anyone recommend a good hardware based modem for $50 or less? I've been searching around and keep finding controllerless (windmodem) types.

I've found a few, but their description's seem to be inconsistent.

I took at the chip "conexant," and I'm a little leary to get something with that chip again.

Has anyone heard any good things about Zoom...I've been looking at this one that seems to be the equivilant of the supra external:

No info on the chip though...

I had the same question and i found that for that amount of money you shoulg get a 3com or motorola modem. Currently I'm using an internal SM56 motorola modem and now I can connect to 52k. Make sure to use the shortest cable possible plus don't connect anything alse but the telephone cable if you want to get good connection speeds.
