Hi.

I have an early version of Windows XP (without SP1), which I reinstalled on
my Dell Dimension 4400 desktop. I installed updates in the sequence as they
appeared at Windows Update. After the first batch of 17 critical updates was
installed, SP2 appeared as the next critical update. After installation and
reboot, I encountered various problems such as Windows restart failure,
errors messages concerning a problem preventing Windows from checking the
computer license. When I ran a check disk, I discovered that SP2 creates bad
sectors and file system errors on my hard drive.

Prior to reinstallation, my system was up-to-date with SP1. I encountered
the same problem concerning file corruption after installing SP2. I tried
installing SP2 via Windows Update and also using the SP2 installation CD.
But I get the same result.

Can someone assist me, or at least inform me whether or not SP2 is
compatible with early versions of Windows XP Home Edition? Thank you in
advance.

Sounds to me like the Dell is losing a hard drive.

Boot to the XP setup CD, and press 'r' for recovery console, run the command : CHKDSK /R

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your response. As I mentioned previous post, I ran Windows
check disk tool after installing SP2, checking both of the following options:
"Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and "Automatically fix file
system errors." After the system finished this operation, I could not
restart Windows; nor could I run the recovery console. Isn't Windows check
disk tool the same function as CHKDSK /R?

If I restore my previous system configuration; i.e., reinstall Windows XP,
SP1, all critical updates (excluding SP2) and all of my programs, I do not
encounter any file system errors.

The problem only occurs after installing SP2. In any event I will try your
suggestion and I will let you know what happens.
