Here are my specs:

Athlon XP 1700+
512 MB of Crucial DDR RAM
Gigabyte GA-7DXR Mobo
20 GB Quantum Fireball HDD
Asus Pure V8200 GeForce 3 (21.88 drivers)
350 watt ATX PSU
Running Windows XP Professional

My CPU runs at around 50 C idle and gets up to around 60 C when running 3DMark2001 and the like. Just yesterday, my comp started hard locking running a game (DAoC). I figured the game is new so it might be having problems, but now it keeps doing it every few minutes. I tried running 3dmark2001, and it locked up too halfway through the benchmark! It must be something seriously wrong to bring XP to a grinding halt, as I always get the error "nv4_disp has entered an infinite loop". I have tried the 21.88 drivers, the newest beta 22.80 drivers, the ones that came with the card, and the XP default - no joy. This just started happening yesterday too... any help?

Smells like a hardware problem with the video card. Try running your game at [-peep-] settings...640x480X16. See if the time between lockups increases. Also you may want to for the hell of it reinstall your video drivers over the top of themselves to catch any corrupt files (like that nv4_disp). I'm betting it's a bad vid card though - bummer.

That CPU temp is quite normal. I think the thermal limit on your athlon is around 90-95 degrees C.

90? That's a little too optimistic.
50 idle is a little too much. You could try downclocking your Athlon to 100 Bus and see if you still got troubles.

You might want to put in an extra case fan. Or, try running with your case open, and see if that helps first. If that does, then you need a case fan or something to help air flow and cool the system down

From reading AMD's web site, that patch is not needed for Windows XP. Someone else suggested that in device manager I change the AGP controller to a simple PCI controller, because there is some bug with AGP controls and Nvidia chipsets in XP. Is this is a viable option, or will it castrate my graphics?

You're right. I misread your post and thought you were using Win2K. Sorry for the mistake.

I'm going to delete my original post so that no one uses the patch by mistake.

Go to ign.com and link to the DAoC boards, you'll see tons of posts about not being able to run this game with Athlon and Geoforce3.I've got a brand new copy of DAoc sitting here as well as a Geoforce3.Be getting my Athlon 1700+ and rest of gear tommorow,i'll let ya know how it goes, heh.
p.s. I notice DAoC only supports Windows 9x/ME(gonna use 98SE)
