My System Restore app is not functioning: I get one of those "Inform
Microsoft?" popups instead. Is it possible to reinstall this app without
totally reinstalling XP? If so, how & where?
Can't remember the last time I used it, I only use it to create/return to
points for systems changes such as driver upgrades, etc. I recently, but not
very recently, added a new hard drive and had the op sys transferred (along
with everything else). Again, I don't recall having used System Restore since
then so perhaps this cause the problem.

To reinstall system restore, go to folder options, view, and check show
hidden files & folders, un-check hide extensions of known file types, apply,
ok.. Go to c:\windows\inf and right click the sr.inf file and click install.
This re-installation will wipe out all preexisting restore points and you
will be starting from scratch, so be warned.

You ARE the man! Plus I love learning stuff any day of the week. I did per
your intsructions and after finding where to point it to for different needed
files the System restore is indeed back to normal (without all my other
restore points). I guess there is no file that keeps those huh?
Thanks again!

Hi,
Sometimes transferring the OS over to a new drive will corrupt System Restore. And
reinstalling is the only fix, which purges all existing restore points. There is now way
of getting the restore points back.
