I recently purchased the Lucasarts Galatic Empire game (based on the Age of Empires II engine). When there is alot of activity onscreen the game crawls or pauses for a couple of seconds. I have an Athlon Slot A (K7) @ 750 mhz w/ 256 megs of RAM. My DVD drive is plenty fast as is my harddrive. I run Windows 2000 Professional. Finally, I have an ATI Rage Fury Pro video card w/ 32 megs of RAM. I remember reading someone awhile back RTS game speed was most dependent on either the videocard or the processor but not both (assuming that both weren't slow to begin with). I want to upgrade the component that is most relevant to the type of gaming I do. Thanks in advance for the advice!

seeing from your description, it could be many factors, I don't know the game you mention, but I played some of the RTS game, and sometimes the game like pausing.. once I think it was my graphic card, but after I upgrade it, it still there, and this game that I played is not 3D RTS.. sorry, I forgot the name, if it's not mistaken it's kingdom under fire.. perhaps you can look at your hard drive activity during the slowdown, if it's because the hard drive, you could upgrade the memory or upgrade your hard drive.. if it's not it could be the processor because of many objects that the processor handle

hope it helps..

It is all based on your processor. However with your slot one I doubt you will be able to upgrade far enough to make any real, or more acuratly, noticable difference. All the activity going on durring your game will really put a hurting on even the fastest processors.

The video card you have is just fine for your type of gaming. If you do get a video card itch, just look for one that has nice quality 2D. Judge this for yourself if you can. I have found no one in forums like these really knows much about 2D environments. I like the looks on the Radeon but I have had problems with their drivers (right now can't get AOE to play on a 2K machine with Radeon VE OEM). In fact my problem is why I was looking in here to start with. Anyway just try to look at actuall screens with the video card your thinking of before you buy.

If I was you and you really want to make a difference. Update your board to a ECS K7S5A for $57.00 at newegg.com and then go for the fastest socket Athlon you can afford (XP if you can afford it). Keep the rest of your system.

Also you could try to sell your board and slot one to pay for the Mother Board.
