I'm having some problems playing various types of movie files that I've downloaded. I was wondering if my graphics card could be to blame?

MSI K7T Pro2
Athlon XP 1600+
512 mb 266 ram

And a crappy 2D video card. I haven't gotten around to getting a spiffy 3D card yet, I was going to wait until I had some time off (been a little busy).

For the most part, movies do play under the WinXP media player, but they've usually got really bad resolution and I can't seem to resize them.

Is it the graphics card, or would a nice codec do the job for me?

I've tried a few other codecs, but they mostly all suck, too. Is there a really good codec I should know about?

Thanks

First off, you definitely want to get a good card to match the rest of your hardware. As far as a codec goes, I've tried several and always go back to WinDVD. It seems to perform the best.

Hey, thanks for the response. I'm definiately getting a new graphics card, I just need to pick it out and get around to buying it (I'm in college and its time for final exams).

Any suggestions on a decent card?

Hi there. If you watch a lot of movies but don't play games, buy a Trident Blade3D for less than $25. If you play a few games, get a SIS315 w/128MB RAM a for a very low cost. They're both good at playback movies, exp. DVDs. WinDVD is cool, but Power DVD isn't bad either. I recommend these cards because I have them.

Wow!! That's bad advice he gave you!! SiS cards are NOT gaming cards. That 128MB won't help for games. It really depends what your budget is but I'm currently recommending a minimum of a GeForce2 Ti for gaming. Anything less will be unable to play games within a year at decent resolutions and maximum detail.

Wait a minute, did i call sis 315 a solid gaming card, I don't think so. I only said "a few games" and the topic about this post is "movie playback"(DVD playback is one important part). Besides, who says SiS 315 can't play games? SiS sure hasn't a good reputation from the beginning, but the recent attemp of SiS 315 isn't bad at all. Consider the price/performence, it's a good card. And it's DVD playback quality(with hardware decoding assist)is much better than any GF3 out the market. Even Blade3D is better than a crappy Nvidia card in DVD. If you guys didn't get your hands on it, don't say much about it. Past experiences can't prove today's technology.

Exactly, that's awful!! Around 1700 points in 3DMARK2001!! That's worse than a GeForce2 MX-400.

I have to say you don't think twice before you have something posted. Sis 315 isn't a gaming card. Still, consider it's relative new, with better driver, it could perform better in the future. A score in 3Dmark2001 means nothing! Not a thing! I can tell you a TNT2 Ultra will only get 15xx points, so it sucks? No way, it's classic. I bet your old MX won't be twice as fast as a tnt2 ultra(even u OC that much and get 3xxx.) You don't buy a Gfx card and benchmark it everyday. You do use it right? Find a card under $60(the lowest price is $51), in retail, perform similar to SIS315, and with a solid DVD playback quality(plus a lot of VRAM). I would respect you very much if you work hard for upgrading your computer.
