My friend just bought the Radeon 8500 and installed the latest smoothvision drivers. He's running Maya 4.0 and it is so dang buggy! the colors would change on him when selecting objects. And textures are missing when applied to objects. This is due mainly to their OpenGL drivers since maya is a opengl app. We reverted to using an asus TVR3800 TNT2 and no more color glitches!!
Also, Counterstrike crashes all the time on the 8500 drivers. ATI screwed up big on their opengl feature this time. Nvidia detonator drivers are much more stable. Someone who has contacts with ATI should really get in touch with them to fix the Maya OpenGL problem. If you have their contact info, let me know so I can really interrogate their efforts in supporting OpenGL.
So, just a warning, whoever is running opengl apps or games, beware of of the instability of the 8500 drivers.
I ran counterstrike at 800X600 on opengl without smoothvision and it still crashes after 5 seconds into the game. Buyer Beware. HOpe they fix the drivers soon.

Best Regards

Next time I have lunch with Ati's CEO, I'll let him know you're having problems.

Did you uninstall the nVidia drivers completely? My suspicion is that they're still there, causing problems.

I have to agree with asleesl8er because i have tried to run Unreal v2.26 on my computer using OpenGL and it crashes. Shogun:Total war doesn't even run at all. He has a Radeon VE and i've recently updated the drivers and still the OpenGL doesn't work. Direct X seems to be working but i havent tried it on many programs. The radeon thats on their now has been the only video card in my system so screwy detonators are not the answer to the problem.

Well, this system is totally new so there are no other video drivers in there besides the ATI radeon's. The nvidia drivers were later installed after I had nuked the drive again to isolate the problem. So I"m pretty sure it's the ati opengl drivers that's causing the color and texture glitches in maya. In the past, the tnt2 drivers worked well with maya. HOpefully ATI is listening and implement some sort of remedy to this problem especially in running 3D apps like maya and lightwave.

If you read into some stuff on Maya, u will notice they don't guarantee performance or even usabaility w/ gaming cards. therefore, no surprise about the R8500, considering that their drivers are buggy and all. I use a Quadro DCC though, so no probs:)

Well, on that quadro DCC of yours, it's just the same core as the GF3 which you can crack to get it to run like a quadro by enabling some features. the only difference is the drivers. So there still might be hope for this ATI card if they fix the drivers. It's probably some scheme to get us to buy their FireGL or 8800 card to get the openGL feature to work better.

That's exactly what he has. A modified GF3.

Quadro DCC sounds better though

Oh God, don't be saying this stuff. I just ordered the 8500. Now I'm wondering if I should send it back.

I'd get a GF3, and if I was using it for graphics, I'd Rivatune its ass to a Quadro DCC.

Juin, are you trying to blame an ati issue on amd, shame on you young man.

Yeah juin, and my kt133a with a sb live worked fine too?

Does that mean there is no via bug???

If the issue only occures on radeon videocards its an ati issue, plain and simple. So dont try and blame it on AMD because you dont like AMD, I dont blame radeon xp lockups on intel systems on intel do I?

Relax, Matisaro, Juin doesn't know what he's talking about.

I've had absolutly no problems in any OpenGL app, perhaps there is another issue, or perhaps you need to clean out your system so there aren't any video driver conflicts. (things do build up over time)

The radeon drivers are quite stable on most systems now not running XP. XP itself isn't stable yet though (here at work, we get code errors on the install of a system that tests to be able to run XP, and once we got that fixed, it still crashes at least 3 times a day)

I don't think cleaning my system registry and old drivers is the problem...you see, my system is totally new. The first graphics app we installed and ran is counterstrike. And it crashes without any fail on openGL every single time. And then we ran Maya. Color glitches Galore. Any more suggestions?

Yes, your'e right, I am running on an AMD chip. But what does that have to do with the display drivers? It's ATI's problem, not AMDs. From that little remark, it shows that you know very little about how graphics work. Lots of shame on you. I'm sure if i popped in P4 and used a board with intel's chipset , we'll still have the same graphic display problems on maya, counterstrike and other opengl enabled games.

If you're really running a quadro, then you wasted your money. Paying 3 to 4 times more for a quadro or oxygen won't get you 3 or 4 times the performance. like you said, Rivatune that GF3...you'd be better off. The only difference are the drivers.
December 16, 2001 9:53:45 AM

He modded his card into a quatro, he did not waste money to get it.
