This is a repost of the original message on the driver message board.

I just installed the Divx 4.11 codec, and while playing an .avi or .mpeg (using windows media player 7) it causes my system to either reboot or crash to a blue-screen-o-fatal exception error. I updated the drivers for my Hercules 3D Prophet III (aka gForce 3) and it still happens.

It seems to crash if I run any application other than media player at the same time.

This seems rather severe and wierd. Any advice?

System:
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GB 233Mhz
Windows 98 2nd edition
256MB RAM
Hercules 3D Prophet III geforce 3

What video drivers do you have? Have you tried using The Playa (at www.divx.com)?

Yes,the playa was a "must" install. And it crashed when played with that too.

Dont use the new version of the codec, sounds like a good option to me.

If you really have to, there have been issues with nvidias latest BETA det drivers (23.11) uninstall them and go back to 21.83, this cleared up 99% of the people who had this issue.(if you do not have a via chipset then ignore that advice, thats when the issue occurs). If it does not help, turn off fastwrites and then try again. Finally, if those things dont help, set to agp 2x mode and try again, if it still is not working, it is not a problem with your graphics card or drivers, set everything back to what it was and look for another solution.

(Also windows xp was sited as a factor in the23.11 issue btw do you run xp?)
