I am not sure what to think of this card. I am going to be buying a video card sometime soon. For one thing, the memory has been cripled to 380MHz - this bothers me. Another thing is that they plan on releasing another version is January or February.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this card or advice for me?
I already have an AthlonXP 1900+ and Soyo K7V Dragon Plus.

Thanks.

I was going to buy a Radeon All-In-Wonder (old version, 32 meg DDR) but decided to hold off until the Radeon 8500DV came out. Now that I've waited I like the RF wireless remote, but that's about it. TV input is beter, but the chip runs hotter because of this. DVD playback is WORSE than the older model (AIW Rad 32) and they've slowed down the video card aspect by crippled the RAM. I think I'll go for the AIW Radeon 32 after all. It's alot cheeper and has slightly worse performance, but isn't too bad. Still, I'll miss that remote.

My origional plan for the 8500DV was to use it as a DVD player (in another room via remote) as well as using it to convert my VHS tapes into VCD or MPEG 4. I justified the higher cost based on the fact that I wouldn't need to buy a separate DVD player for my TV, I could simply use the one in the computer and the remote. Unfortunatly, the 8500DV is more expensive then the AIW Radeon 32 plus a DVD player, so there goes that theory.

As for the new version in Feb, I don't think that there will be a hardware change. I think that ATI is talking about a software (driver) change.

Final word, always beware of anything pushed out the door just before Christmas.

Huh? What are you talking about? Temporal filtering greatly improves quality in sliding objects. Where did you get that?

I saw some links to screen grabs which looked to me(and the site may have been crap I dunno) that the dvd playback looked worse on the new radeon.

I posted the links a while go in this forum.

the 8500DV AIW does have DVD playback issues, but it's not the card, it's the MMC7.5 software.
but then this is how ATI things always go, it's not their hardware, which is always excellent, it's their software and drivers!
try using PowerDVD 4.0 (if you can "find" it), and you should find the DVD playback is beautiful.

The new version they are talking about in jan/feb is the final officail release of the card, not a newer version of the same card, as it's not out yet.

Great advice, Knowan.

Newegg has the 8500DV in stock, I think it actually is an updated version of the card.

the new card they are talking about, at least in the Tom's review, is the European card that will support PAL.
as for the american card, what they got now is what you'll get later. although i am sure there will be a software and driver update, as the card does need it, as does pretty much any new product including the Audigy! (freakin thing)

Knowan,

I am in almost the EXACT same situation as you! I was waiting for the AIW 8500 DV in order to do video tape transfers to VCD and MPEG-4. I was also hoping to get a better 3D card at the same time since I use an old TNT2 Ultra (not a pressing issue right now, but it would be nice).

Now I'm wondering if I should simply buy the old AIW Radeon. Do you know how it's performance and stability stacks up vs a TNT2 Ultra? Also, will I be screwed later on if I want a faster 3D card for gaming but still want to use the AIW for video capture?

Thanks all!

The clock speed of the RADEON 8500DV retail board is 190MHz engine and 230MHz memory (460MHz effective with DDR memory). It is important to note that this is by far the fastest multi-media board out on the market. This card is 2 x faster than the existing AIW RADEON and has comparable performance to the GeForce3 Ti200 with so much more features to offer. This card is should not be judged on performance alone since it has myriads of features (too many to mention in this e-mail) that make it better then any other Multimedia graphics card and has better or equal features to the like of a TIVO.
this is an exact quote from an this webpage http://www.higherzone.com/articles/atiinterview.htm you people need to stop posting something that you dont even know about i am reffering to the post about the ram speed being being 380mhz if you dont have all the information plz dont post it to mislead andbody else who uses this forum to get there information and make there decisions

According to <A HREF="http://www4.tomshardware.com/graphic/01q4/011211/index...." target="_new">Tom's</A>, it's 230 chip/380 MHz (DDR) RAM.
Rivastation is the same review, of course.

Couldn't find any other reviews, sorry.

Remember that there is a new version coming out early next year. I'm sure that is the one that you were talking about. What were you saying about having all the information before posting?
