Keyboard not working in chrome (intermittent problem)

Hello, I'm using Chrome Version 25.0.1364.160 m with Windows 7 64bit home premium, on an Acer 5552g laptop and an external USB keyboard.

Several times a day, the keyboard stops typing anything at all in Chrome. It types fine in other apps, and I've actually resorted to typing emails in other apps, then cutting and pasting using the context menu.

The problem is sometimes resolved by reloading the page several times, or by restarting Chrome.

I've tried screaming, it doesn't seem to do much. Neither does throwing my keyboard across the room, or beating on the wall. Any ideas?

The problem happens in several types of text fields. It has a particular fondness for the gmail compose field and the address bar, those may be its natural habitat. The problem seems to be mostly nocturnal, unless awakened by the fact that I -really- need to get something done quickly.

Jeremy

Oh: just thought to try the integrated keyboard as well, same problem.

More about keyboard working chrome intermittent problem
  1. When I open a new window, the first address bar I open does not accept typed input. The second tab opened DOES, however.

Thanks, it works as solution for the time being (I'm having this problem with Google Chrome most recent stable Version 45.0.2454.85 m) and also bringing on top the task manager via (Shift-Ctrl-ESC) or changing the current active window to something else rather than Google Chrome tab(s) have the same effect.

It's strange problem indeed (I've never encountered this problem except this week with Version 45.0.2454.85 m) and I guess that culprit is a Google Chrome extention or an app (but which one? That's something I couldn't figure out).

I also have these extentions installed and with the same version as you:

    Adblock v2.39
Google Docs Offline v0.5 (I disabled it but I've got the same problem, so I don't think it's the culprit here)
    IDM Integration Module v6.23.15

I began to doubt that IDM Integration Module v6.23.15 (or any other version) is what causing this strange problem (I'll disable it and see what happens)

I am having the same problem.
It started to happen after the last chrome update (Version 45.0.2454.85 m).
I think it happened once or twice in the version before it.

I noticed that it happens when changing tabs, or when opening a new tab.
I can't type in the address bar nor in some text field inside the page (eg. Whatsapp Web).

I also use IDM, AdBlock Plus, ChromeIPass, PushBullet and Google dictionnary extensions.

One solution I found is to minimize then maximize. I also tried the other things mentioned here and they work also.
(It's basically just making the window active - in focus again)

I hope google fixes this soon.

  15. The problem is most likely with the IDM integration Module.

The guys in here figured out how to reproduce the problem:
    https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=528412
    Quote:

    OS: Windows 10 (10240).

Step 1: Install Internet Download Manager (automatically it install Chrome extension to obtain video/sound files).
Step 2: Open Chrome and enable the extension.
Step 3: Open a URL that contains video play (such as https://youtu.be/T3E9Wjbq44E). Then Internet Download Manager popup

appears above the video "Download this video".
Step 4: Click close button of popup and close the "Download this video" dialog.
Step 5: Try to type anything in the omnibox or other input boxes.
What went wrong?: Keyboard input is broken.

I tried it and the keyboard stops every time.
I also deleted the IDM module and tried the steps above and nothing happened (for 5 mins of testing).
Then I reinstalled the extension manually and the problem reappeared.

I can't tell if the problem is in IDM integration module or that this is a specific case of a more general problem.
But if people who disabled the extension don't get the issue for a long time then we can be certain.

  19. I have had this problem. I may have found answer, but need more time using Chrome with this "fix" to determine if it really fixes things long term.

Go to Settings. Select Advanced Settings. Scroll down to "System". If Hardware acceleration is enabled, disable it.

Now, select Extensions. Check if you have a bunch of extensions. You probably do not need most of them. I disabled Google Docs and Google Docs Offline. I would bet if you have these enabled, you probably did not even know what they are. I didn't.

    Restart Chrome.

So far, for me, it seems to resolve the intermittent problem where keyboard was not working.

  20. I'm having the same problem in my organisation with Samsung Chromebox Series 3. 3 of our many devices are coming up with the problem diagnosed in the original post. The only workaround I've seen right now is switching the USB ports the keyboards are plugged in to.

I'll try disabling hardware acceleration and hitting the "start" eg "search" key twice and let you all know if either works on Chrome OS.

    System specs
    Version 45.0.2454.98 (64-bit)
Platform 7262.57.0 (Official Build) stable-channel stumpy

I can confirm this problem only started recently, possibly since the last update?

  24. read all of these posts and answers. I just started experiencing this problem. After reading and trying everything suggested, I was able to solve the issue on my own. While I cant offer a reason as to why, I solved this by switching my usb adapter back to where it was prior to me moving it.

  26. Hello Everyone, I was experiencing this problem too from last one and half month and it feels like throwing your laptop out.

But guess what? I've found SOLUTION today. Its happening because of the IDM's extension installed in your Chrome.

    What to do?
    1. If you want to quickly get rid of this shit > Remove this extension from chrome.

    2. Seems like IDM came up with fixed version, Just download latest IDM or Update it and your problem will be solved.

    hope this helps you guys.
It was so terrible to use chrome when I started having this problem, I uninstalled it several times too. But today I just got a popup from idm and I noticed something like this "fixed chrome keyboard focus issue" and then I updated it and googled the same thing to solve the same issue of others. :)

I have no Extensions running and i even unchecked the hardware acceleration but i am unable to determine the issue of what is causing it.

Hey Jeremy, I'm having the same problem Chrome Version 51.0.2704.47 beta (64-bit) and also with Vivaldi 1.1.453.54 (Stable channel) (64-bit), so I'm guessing it must be some deep "Chrome" problem...but oddly, I'm *not* having it with Opera 37.0.2178.43

It's really frustrating, and as you say, always seems to pop up when I'm in a hurry...it happens MORE frequently the more tabs I have open, and I usually have at least 40 or more open...

    I'm using Chrome on a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch) with OSX 10.11.4

I hope that this bug gets fixed with updates, but am keep to hear if anyone has a solution...(turning off ALL my extensions doesn't keep this from happening, btw.)

I am on OSX El Capitan with latest nightly build of Chrome, and I have this issue. I only have Ghostery and Privacy Badger installed. But disbaling the plugin doesn't help . I write my emails now in sublime text and paste them into the compose. This started 2 weeks ago, and it's super frustrating.

  37. Ok, so for some reason when I hit Ctrl+A then start typing on Gmail, the space doesn't work. I have to backspace everything, hit space, backspace, then type. I'm having this problem on two devices, both of which I recently installed AdBlock Plus on. I think that's the issue. Oh, and one is Win10, the other is ChromeOS, so not an OS issue.
I'm going to try to fix it without removing AdBlock Plus...

  38. I am having the same issue but one thing has helped me.
    I am on windows 7 professional x64 with chrome Version 57.0.2987.133 (64-bit)
I have adblockplus, laspass, but the problem was use to occur before also.
It mainly occurs in gmail new window and some times
    -----------
On new mail, if I start to type type, spacebar does work, but works simultaneously in notepad.
So I did some typing hit back arrow (not back space) then used spacebar.
    It started to work.

This problem is not reproducible hence cannot talk about corrective action,
plz rectify in chrome or gmail code of new window.

    thanks
