Having trouble getting back online with my other computer. In the command
prompt I performed an ipconfig /renew and get a message with the following:
An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket. I tried both
methods in MS KB 817571 but it still not working.

Will a system restore help this issue?

Steve,
Before you jump to System Restore, did you try to do a logoff and Restart
for Windows, and then see if you can connect OK?

Do you remember when the last time this pc connected? Where there changes
in the interim period --- either settings in browser or Windows, or,
hardware?

It was working 2 days ago. I just however recently installed the full
version of Nero, and I also did a registry scan with Registry Mechanic. So,
those could be culprits. How do I get it back to normal and then still use
Nero?

Steve,
In that case, use System Restore, and restore from the point at 2 days ago. You will have to install Nero all once more.

I went through all these steps and as I stated before, it helps only for the
first couple minutes then I go back to losing the connection.

I'm really hoping I won't have to wipe out and reload everything.

Other ideas to try?

Hi, can you use registry mechanic restore from a backup? If so use it,
although a system restore may well repair the damage anyway, one of the
lessons to be learned is is either backup the registry before you use such
utilities or not use them at all...

I'm going to try a restore now, but thought I was on to something when I did
the netsh winsock reset catalog. When I rebooted, my wireless connection was
available and I was able to connect. But after a few minutes, it reverted
back to not available. Does this provide any additional clue as to other
things to do to maintain the connection?

Well, the system restore didn't work.

I think that you still have some malware on your machine.

Scan for and remove all spyware and viruses from your machine.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Update whatever antispyware software that you use and run scans.

[[Most of the Internet connectivity problems arise out of corrupt Winsock
settings. Windows sockets settings may get corrupted due to the removal of
spyware.

There are known spyware programs that install layered service providers
(LSPs) on computers to gather user data. When the spyware programs are
removed, the spyware-based LSPs are also removed. The LSPs are not restored
after removal.

There are several known fixes for this problem.]]
