Hey everyone,

Need a bit of help here. Installed Win98 for a mate on his Compaq P200mmx PC this weekend. When I installed the correct dispay driver (Matrox Millenium) and restarted the PC just gave a few beeps en I can see nothing on the screen. I can see the HD working and it sounds like the PC is continueing to load into Windows. This happens every time. I kow the screen is fine - tested it.
As I do not have any spare parts I thought I would drop this post here and hopefully some1 got something usefull 2 say.
Did not touch any parts or dropped it so no part has jumped out of their slots en everything seems fine when I oppened the box. It worked fine (except for the dispay colours) until I installed new driver and restarted.

Seems like the Dispay card to me, but it also sounds (beeps) like a memory error, what do you think? Can the memory get damanged if there maybe is a display card and motherboard mem addressm coflict?

:/  I don't have a clue what they could mean but the beeps (If not normally there) worry me...

I had simular problem with another monitor of mine and my current graphics card. In my case the refresh rate was too high for the monitor and it could not display a picture. I am not sure that it is the same problem but it could be one answer. Try booting into windows in safe mode. If you can get into windows, change the display settings.
The monitor doesn't require drivers does it ? they are few and far between these days but there are some that need drivers.
If that does not work you could try a different monitor to see if its the monitor.

Yes, nothing on the screen is the worrysome part.
Dought you will be able to boot even to safe mode, but do try it of course, and if that works you have a driver problem.
It seems more likely, however that you have a bios or vid card problem.
By the way can you even get into the bios ?
one trick is keep a key press to generate a "keyboard error" and you will immedeatly be asked to go to bios, usually.
If you like give me your bios make and the beep code error you have: ex beeeeeep-beep-beep-beep witch would be one long three short, whatever.
I have the beep codes with me, and will check them up as soon as you post them.

Heh, there is no way I am going to be able to boot into windows, even in safe mode or even into the BIOS cause I can see absolutely nada on the screen from start to end. Just the Beeeeep - beep - beep sound (If I remeber correctly - @ work now). I need a solution and some ideas from you peeps. As I am a CNE, MCSE, CCNA and A+ etc. qualified I do know some bit bout PC's :p  , but as I do not have any spare hardware to test the system with I cannot say forsure that it is the Ram or Display card. I would put my money on the ram thou, as the beeps sounds tends to make me think so.

Please keep on dropping your ideas and views here.

Thanks

Snowy

Those beeps codes are one of two things:
Funky memory or a Funky Video card. You can usually take the make/model/serial and go to the web and find the exact meaning of that particular beep code.

Something is blown. You can try reseating the mem and vid card as a last ditch...but you're probably going to be buying some parts.

i think so too...the beep code that usually means a "missing" video card goes as the following:
one long beep followed by 3 short beeps.
you might want to yank an existing vid card from another computer and test it on the comp w/ the porblems.
if it is a defective video card...i have 2 suggestions:
1)R8500
2)Geforce3

I have seen this on a lot of Matrox Millenium G200's. The company I wok for has this video card in most of our Desktops. The solution is to Flash the bois on the Matrox Card. I looked on Matrox's site and couldn't find the bois flash. You might be able to find it.
