scardsvr.exe (Smart card Service) won't start!

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support (More info?)

I've got a windows xp sp2 box. The file exists in windows\system32. I've
read the kb832082, and, 1) I don't know if it was upgraded from 2000 or not,
and 2) It appears that Microsoft doesn't want to freely give away the patch,
for fear that it may cause other problems--

Are there other possible solutions, or things to test and try that might
get this box running scardsvr.exe again?
