I should have been more specific. What files from the WinXP OS Disk have to
be on the external drive?

Your motherboard's BIOS would have to have the option (capability) to boot
from an external device.

To the best of my knowledge, a USB/Firewire external HD is *not* bootable to
the XP operating system. The fact that one's motherboard indicates
"capability" for this feature is, unfortunately, irrelevant.
I know there have been many reports (such as the one above) from persons
indicating that a user can boot XP from a USBEHD as long as the
motherboard's BIOS supports this capability, but I have *never* come across
a single confirmed case where this "capability" was achieved. I myself have
worked with scores of motherboards presumably having this capability
together with dozens of different USBEHDs, but I've yet to be able to boot
XP from that device.
