I have jsut swapped my aging Geforce 1 DDR for a Geforce 2 MX400.

Sure, the MX400 is a budget board when compared to a Gefore 3 or even a Geforce 2 GTS or PRO,

BUT, I would not have expected it to be SLOWER than a GF1!

In 3dmark2001, I was getting 2450 with my GF1 on a PIII 800. With the MX400 it has dropped to 2300.

While I am at it, I downloaded and installed the COOLBITS registry tweak that made the Overclocking thing available in the Display Properities. This shows me that the GPU core is at 175mhz but the memory has no value. Instead, it lets me increment the memory setting by %, from 1 to 100. Useless.

Where can I get...

a). The latest detonator drivers (not version 23.xx on the Nidia site but the 28.xx version that i floating about.

b). An acurate overclock tool that actually shows me the current core and memory seting, and not some pointless percentage.

Thanks.

A geforce 1 with ddr is indeed faster than a gf2 mx with sdr. The gf 1 and 2 used pretty much the same core design, althought the gf2's core could clock much faster, however, for the gf1/2 core MEMORY speed was MUCH more important than core speed.(not so with the gf3 core.) So you just wasted 60 bucks, have a nice day ;-).

Doesn't the GeForce 2 chipset support a wider range of effects and features than first GeForce?

Therefore, if the two run about the same speed, he is better off with the MX400.

Not to mention the overclockablity of the MX400.

Not quite a 'waste of money'.

Yes, but not very significant features

True, but you can't compare a GeForce DDR with a GeForce2 MX-400. The MX-400 can only be compared with a GeForce SDR.

Yes, it is. You are losing performance. Additional features are minimal and insignificant!

P.S. HOHOHO!! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!!

I installed Detonator XP. It improved my performance on my Geforce MX400 (by only 200 pts though):

Here's a GeForce Tweak utility. I haven't tried this though. I use the Asus Tweak utility. Is your GeForce an Asus board?

Catheter and Caffeine IV are in place. Let's PLAY.

I agree with everything you say up to a point. One of the significant advantages of the mx is that it does draw less power than the older gforce 256's. While this offers no increase in performance it does help on the compatibility of the card, especially on some older systems. Users that are using the gforce 256 and stuck at agp 1x, may find that the mx, due to the fact they draw less power, may indeed be able to run at agp2x or even 4x. This would indeed make the mx a better choice for them and give them increased performance.

The question is, is that benifit worth 70-99 bucks....and I highly doubt it is.

Your 70-99 bucks is a flawed assessment and does not take into account the resale value of the card that is to be replaced. Only if the thing were to be thrown in the trash can would that be a valid statement
