Hello all, I am a newbie to the 3d graphics card world. I was looking to buy a new 3d card and called Best Buy to see if I have an AGP expansion slot before I cracked the case open. They said I did but they sounded like they had no idea what I was talking about.

Anyway I have an HP pavilon 7940 PIII 1.0 purchased about 3 or 4 months ago from best buy. does anyone have one similiar out there? I am going to open the case and check. Can anyone tell me what I am looking for and the difference between the PCI and AGP slot? Thanks

An AGP slot is at the top slot position and located about 1/2" inset as compared to the PCI slots beneath it. If you have the i815/i815E chipset, you'll probably have an AGP slot, if you have the i810/i810E chipset you definately won't.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

AGP slots often have a differbt color (brown), and the AGP has a divider in the middle (or not a divider at all) while the PCI slots have the divider at the right side.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground  .

Based on how new your computer is, I can guarantee that it won't have a PCI video card.

Therefore, try checking where you plug your monitor in. If it's plugged in vertically (on the left side of the computer) then you have integrated video (and need to open it up to see if you have AGP).

If it's plugged into a slot (oriented horizontally like your modem probably is), then you already have an AGP card.

That's what you get for buying your computer based on color.

It might have a onboard video card and does not have a AGP slot. The easiest way to make sure is open the case and check if there is an AGP slot.
