I'm considering getting a radeon 8500. At pricewatch, there are several around 170-180 dollars, and most are OEM. Do the OEM ones have strangled bandwith and are they slower in any way? Or do they just not come with the retail box, instructions, etc. I could probably find a retail version that costs just about 10 bucks more. But on one company's site, they had both the oem and retail, and the retail costs 90 dollars more!!!

More about : radeon 8500 oem retail

OEM 250/250, RETAIL 275/275

You`ll get nothing and like it.

The performance difference is less than the 10% difference that you can see there. I overclocked my 8500 OEM to Retail and ran 3DMark with the initial drivers offered. I was at 7050-7100 with the oem, and 7400-7450 with the Retail specs. So you're talking less that 5% in general.

you'll be sorry if you buy anything oem or white/brown box. generally the packing of the hardware is sub standard and it will break in shipping. i tried getting a white box from ftic on pricewatch and it shipped broken. they didn't send me a new one in time and i ended up paying full retail at a store. the piece of mind instead of a piece in pieces was worth the extra $100. be wary!

if you can't fix it with a duct tape and a hammer...

Pal,

thanks for the advice. In another life I worked for a reseller and I've seen the video and sound cards come in boxes of 24 but thought nothing of it.

there is nothign wrong with the oems the only difference is the clock speed and you wont get the games that come with the retail the 25mhz results in 8.0GBs of memory bandwidth instead of the retails 8.8GBs

careful when buying a Radeon8500 that isn't in the retail box, since there are various models floating around. the Radeon8500 comes in three flavours, Retail, LE, and OEM.

a Radeon8500 retail will be 275/275 and have a part number (P/N) ending in 1100 or LOWER.

a Radeon8500LE will be 250/250 and have a part number ending in between 1200 and 1400.

a Radeon8500LELE (or OEM) will be 230/230 and have a part number ending in 1500 or HIGHER.

it's a big mess, indeed.

where oh where have all the intel's gone?

I've never seen one that's 230/230. Where did you see it?

On my computer p4 1.7/P4T

My original OEM 250/250 was scoring 7200
At 275/275 i score around 7700.
After overclock (P4 also overclock)85xx.Maybe i can get to 8800.

If you will overclock your card OEM or retail dont change anything.OEM cost less you can take this spare cash for RAMSINK and better colling.

they have 230/230's, they are China made OEM's. check out rage3d.com or reactorcritical.com for info, and unhappy people with these crapola cards.
