I'm builiding a new computer. As a brief synopsis it will have:
Athlon XP 1900+
Soyo Dragon+ Mobo
512MB Crucial PC2100 DDR
2 40GB IBM 60GXPs in RAID (if you know of better similiarly priced HDs, let me know)

I was going to get a Radeon 8500 but then I heard about the new processors coming out in February.

In my current computer (an Athlon 1, 750Mhz) I have a Geforce 2 GTS I could use until February (although I was going to use this computer for friends during LAN games since it can still barely play new games).

I'd like some opinions on whether I should wait or upgrade now.

Also, besides the video card is there any other major things coming out in the next 2-3 months.

Why don't you go for the nVidia nforce chipset motherboards? I'm not sure it will have raid features though.

Now, are you a frame rate freak? do you have all the graphics benchmarks available installed on your system. If not, keep a hold of you're GeForce2 until Doom3 is out. I think it is coming out late 2k2. For current games the GF2 should do just fine. Obviously, there will be some eyecandy improvements if you have a gf3 or a r8500, will that justify the costs?

Cards based on the nv25 should be out on Q2 2002, while cards based on the R300 should be out Q3-4. The R300 will be dx9 compliant. Cards based on the nv30 should be out late in the year or early next year.

What you can do is keep your gf2 for a few months. You can easily do that without losing out on much in terms of features in games. Then when the nv25 or the R300 is out, get a radeon8500 or their ultra version which should be out soon, or the GF3ti500 or any ultra versions they release for pretty cheap. Then you can just get one of the DX9 cards after about a year or so, which should be very good to your wallet.

I'm running an original GF256DDR. Not even a GF2! thats on an athlon 650! Return to Castle Wolfenstein plays great at 1024x768 with all the graphics on high detail. In collin mcrae rally 2, the game slows down if I turn on Cube environment mapping, otherwise the game runs superfast. I've had this system for years!

The new processor might be out in February, but the cards that are on it won't likely be out till march, maybe even april in mainstream. If you can wait till february, the Radeon 8500 and the Geforce 3s will drop in price when the new one comes out, so you'll get a better deal.

In general, there is always something bigger and better on the horizon. You are best off knowing what you want, and what you want to pay for it, and then buy when the item hits that price.
