Okay, once again, I need a video card. It's going have to last for the remainder of this school year, and all during next year at college. I mainly play games, but do some video and DVD stuff (rarely). My max is $200, because I need to replace a broken monitor, and put another 256mb of rdram in my computer.

Specs:
1.4ghz p4 (sucky)
sucky hp mobo (older)
32mb tnt2 pro (sucky)
128mb rdram (will add another 256mb sooner or later)

I was originally thinking a gf3 ti-200, but then I looked at the 8500's. I found that the low priced 8500's were OEMs. They are quite cheaper than the retail, but is it really paying $100 more for retail, or is the OEM a solid deal? I probably will not overclock anything (unless its really easy and I don't have to add extra colling). Also, they have "white box" versions of the 8500 - are they slower, like the OEMs? They are about the same price as the OEM, so are they worth it? Or, should I stick with the ti-200? Remember, the absolute max amount of money on the vid. card is $200, without shipping. Most importantly, this system (and video card) have to last me the remainder of this year, and the next year in college, a total of about a year and a half or more.

But... now I hear about all these new cards coming out. I don't really want to wait more than a month, since my current video card sucks, but I don't wanna pay a lot of money one day, then see that the price fell in half the next.

HELP ME, I'M SCARED!

You idiots, thank you for you totally useless replies. It's not a dell (it's an hp that someone gave me as a gift). Besides, that's irrelevant to my question. If there are any real people here with intelligent minds, please respond.

Ok, relax, relax! We're just kidding!! You see, as computer hobbists, we despise OEMs such as Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. Anyway, I would stick with a GeForce3 Ti200 unless there are very specific things you want to do with your system such as multitasking while watching DVDs or hooking up dual monitors and playing a DVD on a TV from your computer while doing something else on your monitor.

There's (currently) 4 different versions of the Radeon 8500. There's the retail version (by ATI) which runs at 275/275 (core/RAM), then there's the OEM version which runs at 250/250, then there's the other OEM version which runs at 230/230. As well there's the All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV (by ATI) which runs at 230/190, but has alot of video-in, video-out, video capture/ and DVD decoder features.

Although I'm not certain, I believe that the "white box" version runs at 230/230 and standard OEM or "brown box" at 250/250. To make matters even more confusing there is different nomenclature. Some OEM versions are called 8500LE, which I think is the 250/250 version.

What you want is the retail 275/275 or possibly the OEM 250/250 if it's significantly cheeper. Stay away from the 230/230.

Later on if you want to overclock the 250 should be able to go almost as high as the 275. The 230, I've been told, can't be overclocked even as high as 240/245.
