Hey,
I need some opinions on GF3 ti 200 and Radeon 8500. I found them both at the same price, and I need to make a decision between them. I want something that will last too. I know that Radeon 8500 is the best in 3DMark 2001, but its horrible in UT and other OpenGL games. If anybody has any opinions please help me.

I dunno how Tom's Hardware and Anandtech benchmarked the Radeon 8500 but it has excellent UT performance. At 1600*1200, I get ~95-100 fps average while minimum at that resolution is around 55fps. At 1024*768, it's pretty much the same story but the average is slightly higher, ~105fps while the minimum is ~65fps. Also, UT is not an OpenGl game. The Radeon 8500's latest drivers have been optimized for all OpenGL Quake3-engine based games. Any game with a Quake3-engine, such as RTCW is as fast as a GeForce3 ti500. The only game which the Radeon 8500 truly has bad performance is Giants, and rumours are it will be fixed with the upcoming drivers. It really bugs me when people compare the G3Ti200 to a Radoen 8500 when the Radeon 8500 is designed to compete with nVidia's top-of-the-line, GeForce3Ti500.

Note: I think this slow UT issue only occurs with P4. Both Tom's Hardware and Anandtech only tested the Radeon 8500 under a P4 platform.

I have to agree with AMD_Man. The 8500 is a much better choice vs. a TI200. Now if you were talking about a TI500, that would be different since the two cards are very close in benchmarks, etc.

Cost of R8500 retail: $300
Cost of GF3 Ti500: $285

Why do you always compare the lowest retail price of the GF3 Ti500 to the highest retail price of the Radeon 8500? The GF3Ti500's suggested retail price from nVidia is $350.

Cause I can't get that image of an R8500 $300 in Best Buy out of my head. Ew....I even touched the box!:)  Actually, it's b/c the lowest I have seen for retail is $299. OEM is clocked lower, so if u wanna compare that, I'll just say that the ti200 is the "OEM" version of the GF3 series.

lol, everything is overpriced at a retail store!! Go to a local computer shop! You'll find the retail for significantly less!

L-o-c-a-l computer shop?? What's that?? We don't have any of those in my area!

huh? That's not possible? Local is relative to you, flamethrower, not me, just in case you misunderstood. How can you not have any private computer shops? You live in the States right? If you live in a major city then you'll find dozens!

Ah, see I live in a small town in Westchester. No local shops here (unless u consider me going around and fixing people's comps one).

AMD_man, the difference between the gf3 and the r8500 in ut and other ogl games is INDEED THERE.

In ut's case specifically, a ti200 wipes the floor with a retail radeon.

The ti200 is cheaper than the retail radeon, and even the oem radeon as well, plus with this new, 250/250 OR 230/230 differen oem cards crap ati is pulling, cheating non withstanding, the ti200 IS the better buy at this time.

ESPECIALLY, when the person asking asked specifically about ut.

To the poster, if you like ut, DO NOT BUY A RADEON8500!.

Get a ti200 for less and it will perform faster in ut, and about par on everything else.

If you want the highest 3dmark2001 score imagineable, which does not translate into any better performance in real games, even in max payne which most of the 3dmark2001 engine is based on, then by all means, spend more and get a retail 8500.

Matisaro, why is it that you so wholeheartedly hate ATI? They cheated? So what? It's gone! The ATI drivers are now optimized FOR ALL QUAKE3-ENGINE games, includes RTCW! Assuming at least Tom's Hardware's scores of UT under UT for the GeForce3 Ti500 (which they can't be, something is really fishy!), I can say that the Radeon 8500 is roughly equal in performance to a GeForce3 Ti500. Now obviously I can't contradict two of the most respected hardware review sites on the web, so I believe that the P4 is generally an extremely poor performer in UT! I never get under say ~90 fps even under 1600*1200. This leads me to believe that the P4 is extremely slow in UT in comparison to the Athlon. Again, if this also applies to hte GeForce3 Ti500 and the same ratio between the two cards exists, the GeForce3 Ti500 should also score significantly higher under an Athlon system.
