I recently purchased a Hurcules Geforce2 GTS 64MB. After uninstalling my old Voodoo3 3000 PCI, I eagerly fit the Geforce2 in the AGP slot. I installed the freshest NVidia drivers (23.11) and soon after booted up and everything seemed to work fine. I played a few games, surfed the net, played some mp3s with WinAmp, and all of a sudden, my computer froze. After I restarted, it froze again. It continued to freeze every time I restarted, usually in under 30 minutes of use, so I decided to do something about it.

Here is my system:
Windows 98 SE
Abit BX133-raid (440BX chipset)
Intel Celeron FCPGA 550 o/c to 850
(FSB at 100, Voltage at 1.85)
Soundblaster Live! Value
Lynksys Combo EtherPCI Lan Card II
Hercules Geforce2 GTS 64MB (Nvidia 23.11 drivers)
Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32A
Western Digital 18 GB 7200RPM ATA/66
256MB Azzo Cas2 RAM
256MB Micron Cas2 RAM
US Robotics 56K Internal PnP
ViewSonic G790

To remedy the problem:
1. I went to the Intel site and updated my chipset drivers.
2. I flashed to the most recent Abit bios (ZW)
3. I flashed my Plextor drive.
4. I flashed the Geforce2 from Hercules’ site.
5. I installed the newest Hercules drivers, and also an older version of Nvidia’s drivers (21.83). I am no
6. I raised my CPU voltage from 1.70 to 1.75 to 1.80 to 1.85.
7. I updated Winamp to 2.78c
8. I updated from IE 5.5 to IE 6.0

Still nothing has seemed to work. My computer ran flawlessly with the Voodoo3, sometimes I could leave it on for 4-5 days without a problem. I do not know what the problem could be. The freezes usually happen when I am listening to Winamp and using IE at the same time. Is it possible that the AGP card runs short on voltage, and therefore freezes the system? If so, is there something I can do to raise the voltage to the Geforce2? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Note: The CPU is not overheated, it runs at around 93F. My room temp is 72F, and I keep my case open :)  . Thanks Again!

Could be your CPU overheating, or a power supply problem, try lowering your room temp and see if it helps, or open the case and blow a fan into the side.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Install Nvidia drivers 12.41 or 12.90. Most people can'y run higher than 12.90 with GF2 cards, some can but most can't. The common problem with drivers higher than 12.90 is a system freeze after 5-15 min. I also suggest lowering your CPU back to 1.75. Also check and set the AGP aperature size to 64MB or 128MB, the 256MB setting sometimes cause system freeze.

Crap, all the good ones are already taken.

Is your video card sharing an IRQ with anything if it is you should resolve it? Geforces work best when they don't share.

Old video drivers are a big nuisance. Make sure all the 3DFX files are removed from your system and that the Registry is clean of 3DFX references. (Take care doing this).

Also having two GART VXD's installed is a big NO-NO. The only one that should be loaded is the one for your chipset. (It may have a different name). I know that ATI, in the past, loaded it's own GART. I don't know if 3DFX did the same.

This may help;

I had a very similar problem with my PNY GeForce 3 Ti200 just after X-mas... I tried everything, voltages, refresh rates, driver updates, bios updates, etc... I have no idea what was going wrong, but it drove me near crazy. I'm running Win2k Pro, and did a clean reinstall... A little hectic with the # of progs I had installed, but everything's workign perfectly now.
Hope it helps.
