I'm having a problem with RTCW under WinXP with my Radeon 8500. Gameplay is 100% smooth but it's very slow at loading and closing the game. It takes up to 20secs to load and close RTCW. According to the readme, RTCW uses 300 to 600 MB Virtual memory. That sounds like a lot!! Does that mean I need at least to 600MB RAM to be able to load it completely into memory? If so, I may have to think about upgrading to 768MB or 1GB of RAM.

Well.. I probably can't help but I don't have that problem, I have 512MB DDR and it loads quite fast. BTW, I have a GF3. If it's a virtual memory thing, set your min and max to be the same number. I have both at 2048MB I believe.

No it doesn't need that much RAM ! I run the game perfectly well with 256MB RAM, although to cache it all to physical memory you would need a hell of alot... but thats down right insane talk unless you really want to throw money away :/
The slow loading/closing could be to do with the caching onto and off the Hard drive... I am not sure. It loads and closes fairly quickly on my system (PIII 866) about 5-10 secs to get to the first menu - just timed it at 8
If you have not done so already you could set a constant value to you page file which may speed things up.
If your talking about individual maps then expect it to be quite slow unless you have a powerful system.
Doubt its to do with the graphics card if anything :/

I have my page file set to min 384MB, max 768MB. Agh, I don't think you're throwing away money if you can avoid using the page file! Even with a RAID, that thing can slow down performance. Ahh, well, I'm seriously considering 1GB RAM now.

Ok set the min and max to the same value like previosly stated ! Otherwise windows constantly wants to change the size of the file to suit its needs. That change from 384mb to 768mb could slow you system considerably !
The usual thing is to set the min and max value to double the amount of RAM you currently have. With people having more and more physical memory these days its becoming less necessary, I would say if you were previously happy to allow up to 768 to be used continue and just up the min value to the same.
