Which of the desktop models include a windows XP CD? Seems like the bottom
end models don't include the disk.

Thanks

The Optiplex line is still offerred with the media at o extra charge.
This isn't suprising considering the Latitude line is as well. I won't
bother checking, but I'd be willing to guess the Precision line of
workstations does as well.

If you get a CD burner, there is a utility that lets you burn a real XP CD.
Also, most reports here have been that if you call and ask after the
purchase, they will send the disk.

We here in Australia get the Windows XP disk. Its called a recovery disk
but it is actually the full OEM Dell cd.
I have bought 5 Dimension 8400s and have a xp disk for each one.

Are you sure? Because I know 'recovery CD' used to mean to install it
would restore to factory defaults and would only install dell drivers
and such.

I suspect he means Restore, rather than Recovery, but for Dell they've
always been 'real' XP CDs, regardless of the name.

Some of the v2 mini-desktops like the 4600c come with a DVD called the
"windows XP media center", which is basically a "Recovery DVD". I was
a bit confused on my first call with one of these, because I was used
to a regular recovery CD. I expected something called a "media
center" to be an optional, non-essential DVD.

As a warning, Dell no longer provides windows 2000 recovery CDs. If
you lost yours, and you need to re-load windows, you'll need to borrow
a friend's win2k CD (this was the exact quote from a dell phone tech).

That's just a Windows XP Media Center Edition installation DVD. My I9300
came with one. MCE is too big for a CD.

Tom,

NOW you tell me! :)

I didn't order a DVD R/W (or whatever it's called) with my XPS 5; just the
DVD-ROM and CD-RW. And I'm getting WinXP Media Center Edition. :(

Well, it's due today, so I guess I'll find out shortly whether they sent me
media or I have to make a phone call....

One would hope they'd include the CD with the top-of-the-line Gen5; I know
as recently as last week all Latitude (corporate) notebooks still had the
media option listed on the website at no extra charge.

I believe all MCE equipped machines come with media. Let us know.

Logged on a second ago to do just that, and your post was the first one that
I saw.

Yes, my brand new toy came with an XP Media Center Edition DVD, plus a bunch
of other CDs with drivers, etc.

Main reason I posted earlier was just surprise. After all the non-stop
threads about the presence or absence of OS media, I was all set to burn a
WinXP CD as soon as I got my new system plugged on and set up.

And then I saw your post, and went suddenly went into panic mode: how do I
burn a WinXP DVD without a DVD burner? <LOL>

Hey, it's been over four years since I bought my last computer; I'm allowed
to be a bit jittery. :)

Anyway, all is well so far. Haven't plugged it in yet; still getting
organized.

I'm inclined to say the reason the Lat's still include the CD is because
they're in the small business section (as noted in my previous post,
Optiplex's can be ordered w/ CD as well).

Yep. Don't want to piss off the corporate folks.

Like I said earlier with all my Dell PCs I have received a disk which
has a Dell sticker on it that states it's a "system restore disc" but
the disk is actually a full OEM copy of Windows XP. As with any of the
computers I have purchased from Dell, when I first receive them I plug
them in to make sure everything works ok. Then I reboot the machine with
the OEM disk that came with the pc and delete all the partitions, create
a new one and do a clean install of Windows XP. I then use the 8400
Resource CDs that also came with the computer to install all the device
drivers, like the intel drivers for the board, the monitor and video
card drivers and all the other device drivers that run on the 925x
board. The latest 8400 that I bought also had the sata drivers on the
OEM windows disk so I didn't even need a floppy drive to install them.

I assure you I am telling the truth, Someone else from Australia like to
back me up?

If I burn the CD, does that include all necessary drivers?
I just ordered a 4700 with burner.

Well, maybe. In theory Dell has slipstreamed the drivers, but they may not
be the current drivers. It's best to download the complete set from
support.dell.com and make a second CD.
