XP slow creating a folder or moving files.

This is driving me nuts, since im trying to organize about 12,000 mp3
files.
I use Powerdesk for file management, but it even happens with
Explorer.
Creating a directory will take about 15-20 seconds, after moving
files on the same drive that can take 40 seconds extra.
I have no idea why, any suggestions?

1700 XP, 512 megs ram.

btw, when I do that, my cpu usage hits 100% and stays that
way for the period its moving or creating a dir.

There could be a lot of reasons for your problem but there are a few things
I would check right off. First I would ensure that you have enough disk
space. Anything under 500mb free is more than pushing it.

Also it sounds like you have a lot of data on the drive and I am guessing it
didn't all come from one strait download which means fragmentation is a
serious possibility.

You might consider Deframenting the drive with either the defrag too that
comes with windows or download a third-party defrag tool like the one put
out by O&O software which gives you a lot more options.

I have 9.6 gigs free on a 60 gig HD, and I defrag with Diskeeper Pro which
is also set to auto, a complete defrag was recent too. Any other suggestions
or ideas?

My next step would be running diagnostics on the drive and making sure it
isn't a hardware issue. If it isn't that then what is the process that is
taking up 100% of your processor? If it isn't the system and a different
app that might give you a clue as to the problem. Also, do you have another
drive in the computer that you are using that doesn't effect your system in
the same way when you move files to it?
