I have a GeForce2 and the fan is reving up to high at post and making a loud vibrating noise, so Im preparing to replace it when it fails. Im looking at the crystal orb, but the current hsf is held to the chip with a thermal compound/adheasive. How do I get it off?
Place something thin and flat against the card under the heatsink to protect it, then use a thin screwdriver to gently pry it off.
You can also replace most graphics card fans with 40mm CPU fans without removing the heatsink if you have the room to spare (extra thickness can interfere with first PCI slot).
Also, it depends on what you mean by "thermal compound". If its that black glob of crap, then here is a warning.
1. do not apply any vertical pressure. You may scratch/damage the chip.
2. it requires a LOT of pressure to get that glob off. So dont freak out.
3. When it comes off, it will literally POP off. not scrape off. It will pop off quickly and likely scare you.
4. Use 90% isopropyl alcohol to remove any remaining residue. it dries quickly and wont damage anything.
Thermal glue is crap, just be careful getting it off.
