Ok I've been searching around again......

Ok I have a Geforce 2 Ultra, I got it in my Gateway comp, its Core is at 250MHz and Memory is at 460MHz how high can I overclock it without overheating? Also, is it worth getting a Radeon 8500 (OEM, NOT LE) at 250MHz core and overclocking it to reach the retails specs(what are the differences between radeon8500 OEM and retail versions besides core MHz?) or getting a Geforce 3 TI200(what are the differences between it and the TI500 besides MHz?) and overclocking it to whatever I can, though not getting it overheated. so basically the question is, is it worth getting an OEM Radeon 8500 for about $200 and overclocking it to retail, or getting a retail geforce ti200 and overclock it enough to be a competitor to the radeon 8500 (if thats possible without needing to change its heatsank/fan of course) or just overclocking my Geforce 2 Ultra a bit?

or if I should wait for the radeon R300, or Geforce 4, prices will probably drop after that too....hmm

seems your tying to hard...if you do your home work,in toms,or out side they will tell you what you want to hear,or what they have used or tried. Most of the time they will try to tell you what is right.Nothting is right...What is right for you?No one can tell you that,WELL WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH THAT..Ive been using a V5 for about a year..Laugh.Ive read a lot of reviews seems frame rates and Clocks are the hype..Ive got my eye on a mx 400 64..Its old,but it seems good for gaming..good test scores..Do yuor homework..

I wasnt aware there was any difference in 8500 retail or oem. There is substantial difference in the Ti200 and Ti500 besides chip frequency (175Mz , 240Mz). The Ti200's Memory is 400Mz whilst the Ti500 is 500. The Ti500 has a higher fill rate, something like 1.2 billion compared to 875 million on the ti200. The ti500 also has 10 million more triangles pre second. other than that they are identicle and ti200s can overclock to ti500's comfortably and reach similar benchmarks, so its really up to you. As far as gefore v radeon, disregarding future or current leaked drivers the Gti500 is supereor in speed under normal gaming conditions and the Ti200 isnt that far behind the radeon either. Radeons are supposed to have better image quality though. Ultimately i would put it down to price as all of them are pretty sweet cards !!

No, I'm sorry, but you're wrong. There is no difference besides clock speed. You see, fill rate, T&L performance and memory bandwidth are all tied in with clock speed.

I overclocked my Geforce 2 Ultra to 285MHz(Core) and 500MHz(Memory), not much of a performance gain (not as if I was expecting one....), so it's pretty much down to buying an OEM Radeon 8500(leaning more towards the radeon), or the Geforce 3 Ti200, either way I'll have a little overclocking to do (or in the case of the TI200, alot)...

Don't do it!! The GeForce2 Ultra is still fast enough for practically all the games out there. You won't see a huge performance gain with a Radeon 8500 or a GeForce3 Ti200. But if you must insist, I recommend teh Radoen 8500 (just make sure it's not the LELE) as its latest drivers allow it to outperform most of nVidia's offerings. I know that a retail Radeon 8500 can outperform the GeForce3 Ti500 in most cases with the latest leaked drivers.

I agree with AMD-Man. Keep your current card at least until the next generation of video cards is released/announced in April. Prices will drop and you can decide between skipping this generation altogether for teh GF4/R400or getting a cheep 8500/GF3 and overclocking. Your current card should be sufficient until then.

I need to get another video card. I'm not sure when, how much and how fast the new ones will be. If April I can't wait.
So, gf3 or R8500. Now last I new the gf3 was ahead, not much. And just what is a leaked driver? It's sounds like something you can't get. I seen the 8500 from $175-300+ is it the same and just more software?

A leaked driver is a beta driver that has been designed internally by ATI but has been leaked into the public and is now being used by some of the public. You can get the latest 6011 drivers for the Radeon 8500 at http://www.rage3d.com

Thanks I saved it. I'm going to check out the price. box is 180 and retail is 340. I'm just hopeing it's more software. Cause I just need something to hold me over to the new cards come out. Not sure what I want to do.

If you just need something to hold you off til the new cards come out get an Cardexpert Geforce 2 MX400 which can be bought for $71 (including shippling)with no tv-out or $76(including shipping)with tv-out, or if you don't play too many games (or games that aren't very graphically advanced) just get a Cardexpert Geforce 2 MX200 for $51(including shipping)with no tv-out at newegg.com

$340USD for a retail Radeon 8500? That's way overpriced! You should be able to find it for $250 or even less.

Yes, there is a difference. The OEM is clocked lower.

I have 2 gf2 now. Ultra and GTS. As long as my kid doesn't start buggy me to put the computer back in her room or let her play with one I should be all right, but time will tell. I took the computer out of her room for not playing UT very nicely and going into chat rooms. So I put Win 2000 on it. Thanks for your sudjestion.

Whoa wait a sec, if you have an Ultra and GTS why do you need something to hold you over for the new cards? You have something that will hold you over! If you want to spend that much on a new card anyway....My advice is to either wait for the new cards (and the price to drop on older cards) and get the best you can afford, or get an OEM (not LE) Radeon 8500 for around $190 or something like that at www.goroyalpc.com and overclock it to 275c/550m (be careful when overclocking radeons and make sure you have sufficient cooling) or if radeons just aren't for you, get a Geforce3 TI200(make sure it's a good overclocker((read reviews on it))) and overclock it to TI500 speeds with powerstrip (or nvmax or rivatuner) Either way you get a (near?) Top-of-the-line Graphics card

It's not that I want to spend that much money, because I all ready have and still need more stuff. So depending how much more I spend to get what I want, then I will decide if I want a gf3. Depending when the newer cards come out. But if I do get a gf3 the Ti 200 might be the thing if I can over clock it close to a 500. I'll be using a Koolance case, so cooling shouldn't be a problem, but I yet to get this up and running. Thanks for the tip.
