i have a geforce2 mx400 right now, and while playing counter-strike..it seems a lot darker than before, and the gamma in the game is set at max so is brightness on the monitor..is there any way i can make it just a little brighter?

You also can adjust gamma settings with the drivers.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground :eek:  .

how? i checked out the advanced settings under desktop properties i cant change anything there..

I use the NVidia drivers from their website.
I looked in my drivers, and you seem to be right, sorry I don't know another way.

Try a program called powerstrip . It will allow you to set different gama settings for 3D, OpenGL. And when running will apply these when you run games.
Your desktop gama settings are usually bypassed for games.
