I just clicked user accounts, and where used to be icons (not sure what
exactly) next to the user accounts, user accounts types, switching users,
etc. tabs, there now lies ugly red Xs. Any ideas on how that came to be and
how to regain their previous status?

Red X mark appears in the User Accounts applet menu links
