Remember our discussion about weither a Geforce3 would improve the framerates of games on my PC? Remember that you were adamant that it didn't make the slightest bit of difference? Remember that I said I'll buy the card and see if it makes a difference and then 'have words'? well here they are.

The geforce3 improved ALL my games massively! the fps on quake was around 80! (compared to 23 with the voodoo4. I did what you said to show fps) It went over 100 in simple scenes and down to 50 in complicated scenes. The directx sdk demos were something like 3 times the fps that they were on the voodoo4. Black&White (which ran choppily, and sluggish on my voodoo4) ran smooooth. Wolfenstein ran smoother than before.

ANyway, you get the picture. Your only comfort might come from the knowledge that I am having trouble witht he card (my system keeps hanging. and not in games - in things like internet explorer) But hopefully that won't be for long.

I KNEW all along that the HWT&L improved framerates.

I still don't believe it. I'd like proof that you are getting 80fps! What game is that? Surely not Quake III?

EDIT: I've never seen a K6-2 system run Quake III at 50fps+. Those numbers seem extremely off. Then again, you can ask Crashman, he specializes in selling obsolete hardware. It doesn't make sense how the unpipelined FPU in the K6-2 can handle a game that well. Surely T&L can't have that big of an effect.

I'm running a 1.33GHz Athlon with a Radeon 8500 under WinXP. I barely get over 85fps in Return to Castle Wolfenstien. I get about 180fps in Quake III with no sound and around 153fps with sound on at 1024*768. I have a feeling that those numbers you are getting from Half Life, which is an old, less-demanding game.

Again, a Geforce3 wiht an AMD K6-2 500MHz is a highly unusual combo. I'll PM Crashman about the possible performance of this highly unusual combo.

I wasn't arguing with you, but from all the reviews I've seen with a K6-2 and higher-end graphics cards (a GeForce2 GTS, for example), the K6-2 ran slightly faster but still horribly.

Swicth your cpu with your GPU.

Lol, yeah, stuff that GeForce3 chip into your CPU socket and you'll get better performance, hehe. :wink:

That's not surprising. When i had a Voodoo3 in a k6-3 it did quite well, im sure the GF3 would do much better than the voodoo4

Hmm, maybe I'm missing something here, but how could teh K6-2 or even the K6-3 handle an FPU-intensive game such Quake III? Sure, the GeForce3 has T&L but in older games like Quake III T&L wasn't used very well.

I know my k6-3 400 @420 got 1700 3dmarks with a tnt2 m64 in 3dmark 2k1. Can't remember what the voodoo3 got though.

lol, because in that case, the TNT2M64 was the bottleneck. The Voodoo4 is significantly faster than the TNT2M64. The Voodoo4 is a Geforce2MX-class GPU.

Yea, but if i remember right the voodoo cards were VERY cpu dependant.

i had an old voodoo 3 3000 that got around eighty fps but it was with an athlon 600 oc to 750 and tweaked to [-peep-]....when i had my k63 450 i never got over 50....besides that cpu can hardly begin to take advantage of a geforce 3.....definately upgrade your board, processor, memory if you want to make your investment worthwhile!....now with my athlon xp 1900+ I get about 190.3 fps at complete default settings on game options and textures etc maxed...at 1024*768 on my geforce 2 ultra oced....
good luck =]

From www.dictionary.com: <i>
ob·so·lete (bs-lt, bs-lt)
adj.
No longer in use: an obsolete word.
</i>

nothing really to do with your situation but it irritates me to see people use this word, obsolete, so freely when it surely doesn't fit in with what they are saying. if he can use his k6-2 then it is NOT obsolete! my p2 300mhz is not even obsolete!

didnt have one of em electronic pens so ill just type my name,<i>CoOoLMaNX</i>

Dictionary.com isn't exactly the best dictionary. Obsolete also means it has been replaced by better and faster things making it no longer useful, in the computer world. I see obsolete used in that fashion all the time. It's NOT being misused!

let me apologize but your use of obsolete in this case is indeed correct, but AMD_Man your definition is still not correct, "replaced by better and faster things..world." From britannica.com:
<i>
Main Entry: 1ob·so·lete
Pronunciation: "äb-s&-'lEt, 'äb-s&-"
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin obsoletus, from past participle of obsolescere to grow old, become disused, perhaps from ob- toward + solEre to be accustomed
Date: 1579
1 a : no longer in use or no longer useful b : of a kind or style no longer current : OLD-FASHIONED
</i>
so yes the cpu is OLD-FASHIONED but again, not how you think of obsolete to be. Just wanted to clarify things :smile:

I am definately not lying. I started on level 2, in the outer 'room' the fps was not consistent, but never went below 40. it averaged at about 60. in the corridors it was over 100 (even when the other player was there shooting rockets at me). I tried other levels - same story.

I tried other games, same story. I played with the geforce demos and they worked like a DREAM!!. showing me things that I didn't think computers could do, let alone my obsolete crappy little k62 500mhz!

But the computer kept crashing, just hanging. in non-3d places (sometimes in 3d too). I tried everything with no success. And finaly, Like the STUPID IDIOT I am, I decided to update the bios. I followed all the procedures, got the right bios for my mobo, backed up my old one, updated it, reset, and (you've guessed already) the computer wouldn't boot far enough to put the old bios back on DOH!

Anyway, not a complete crisis. More of a crisatunity (homer's word) because I have inquired about a new mobo and processor, and it turns out that a 1000mhz plus combo (cpu,mobo,case) is dirt cheap. No prices for guessing what my next paycheck will be used for.

to end. I knew all along that HWT&L *should* improve the games, because as someone who has been learning how to write games using directx, I know what a *huge* job the t&l is compared to all other jobs (it won't seem huge looking at code, because directx does it all behind the scenes). even complex AI
