A while back I bought a copy of Win7 Professional 64-bit and installed it on my laptop.

My laptop died recently, HDDs should be intact although I haven't looked yet.

I plan to build my own desktop in the next week or so and would like to use the same copy of windows - will I be able to use the same auth key, if not what should I do so that I am in a position to use it.

Cheers.

Hi Penitent,

As long as your copy of Windows 7 Professional is a full retail copy (as opposed to an OEM copy) and you are only using it on one computer you will be able to put it on your new desktop.

You'll need to call Microsoft to activate - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929

I believe it might be an OEM copy - it was from the student offer mid last year that digital river kinda screwed up on with the distribution.
