I'm looking at replacing my existing graphics adaptor. I have been looking at the Elsa MX400 due to it's passive cooling - main thing for me is noise - or rather as little as possible. An alternative could be a GF3 Ti200 board, but they all have active cooling. Does anyone have some experience with the noise level for Ti200 boards ? Any comment appreciated !

More about : noise

I would bet that it would be inaudible, the ti cards i mean. I can't hear the fan on my Radeon.

I have the Visiontek 6564 GF3-Ti-200 and I can't hear the Video card fan at all. I can only hear the same low level hum of the CPU and Case fan, the video card had no added effect.

I can;t hear the fan on my ti200.
My 60mm 7,500 RPM thermoengine fan sees to that.

I have the same issue, I want to upgrade my graphics card but I want one that's silent.
Leadtek's GeForce 3 Ti 200 seems to have a better heatsink than the other Ti 200 cards, so I’m hoping that it will have a quieter fan.
The other option I'm considering is to wait for the GeForce 4 cards. If they release a GeForce 4 MX (it’s rumoured they will) then I may be able to get one with passive cooling.

For those of you who claim that the Ti 200 cards are very quiet, remember that volume can be relative. Something that seems quiet next to another sound can seem quite loud when that other sound is removed. I didn’t think my Hard Drive made any noise while idle…until I put it into my new ultra-quiet computer; now it’s the second loudest component.

It's silent- vid card fans aren't loud at all....

Do you have one? If so, what other fans are in the computer that it's in?
I have to save up some money, so I'm going to wait for the GeForce 4 cards regardless.

Somerandomguy,
Exactly my issue. How are you coming to the conclusion that Leadtek has a better heatsink ? Have you seen any reviews focused on this issue ?
In the past I have been looking at Elsa's products since they seem focused on noise as well as quality and speed, but I don't know if that is also the case for the Ti200 cards.

I only said it seems to have a better heatsink, I haven't done much research into it since I'm not buying right away.
In the Tom's Hardware review of 21 Ti cards it says "The huge, heavy heatsinks on the memory and GPU are very impressive, to say the least." This doesn't mean that it's any quieter though.
I've looked at a the web pages of all the major card manufacturers and I can't find a single decibel rating for any of the cards or any Ti 200 cards with passive cooling. However, nVidias reference card for the Ti 200 has passive cooling, so it may be possible to run one if you replace the heatsink and fan with a better heatsink and no fan. Again, I have yet to look into this.

I read a review - can't remember where - but that claimed the Nvidia Ti200 reference card had a passive cooling as you are also statement, but it ran very hot - this is probably why all brads have active cooling.
Secondly, I got an email back from Elsa stateting their Ti200 board has a noise level of 26dB - or in other words approximately what other low noise components produce.
Anyone out there seen similar number ?

I had the same card (Gladiac MX). The chip was getting very hot so I wouldn´t prever this card. At www.frozen-silicon.com you can get passive coolers from Zalman for graphics cards.

I don't know about the TI-200, but I know the Radeon 8500 has a VERY quiet fan. Your power supply fan probably makes at least 30db, so anything under that is truely negligable

I sold my soul to Microsoft, and all I got was this lousy operating system.
