Hey guys...I gotta problem...
I just got done putting together my first DIY machine and my graphics card/display adaptor is driving me nuts.

Here is the system:

Mobo: ECS KTVA3 (KT266A)
CPU: Athlon 1700+
Ram: 256 DDR
OS: Win2000
Vid: Gainward/Cardexpert GeForce 2 Ti/450 (w/out TV Out)

So everything seems to be working great...except that my monitor shows as "default" and I can't install the proper drivers.

I tried to install the unitily that came on the enclosed CD (EXPERTool (which say's its installed but wont run)). I have been having problems with the drivers/display (only gives me "Default Monitor" 16 Colors and 640X480 or 800X600).

I have tried to use the drivers on the CD they sent but when I try to install them I get an "not compatable with Win2000" error message.

SOOO... I downloaded the Detonator Driver Ver:14.10 (WHQL) and was able to get that driver installed (once) and my monitor to recognize (optiquest)...but I still had only the 16 Colors, 640X480 or 800X600 options and no Expert Tool or other devise to manipulate the settings.

Since this small success I have tried to install the "faster" drivers on the CD and I now can't get the WHQL driver installed at all (my monitor is back to default again).

Needless to say, I'm ready to pull my hair out. I dont know what Ive done wrong (something with the MoBo? something with my Win2000 install?)

ANY suggestions or directions would be greatly appreciated!

If you haven't already done so, load the Via 4-in-1 drivers.

If you have already loaded the drivers then re-do them but with a "clean install". To do this run the installer but choose the uninstall option for each of the components. Do not reboot when prompted but rather run the installer a second time. This time let everything install. Don't forget to load the AGP driver in "Turbo Mode".

You may have to reload the nVidia Detonators but this time it should work properly after the "clean" 4-in-1 installation.

Ok...instead of using the WHQL driver from Gainward's site...I used the new detonator driver from nVidia's site and viola...it seems to work!!! (I still dont have a utility to tweak it...and I'm not sure if I'm getting everything out of the card (the AGP4 for example). Is there a utility you would reccomend (since it doesn't look like Gainward's works very well. (I didn't seperatly download the 4-in-1 drivers...should I do that now as well?)

Thanks for the reply btw... I admitt I'm a n00bie to all this...but its a great feeling having invested less than $600 and having a system at least 3X more powerful than my old Micron machine (circa 1998).

Don't worry about getting AGP 4X working. There just isn't much real performance difference between 4X and 2X.

As for utilitities Power Strip is good and so is Geforce Tweak. You can get one at <A HREF="http://www.3dchipset.com" target="_new">http://www.3dchipset.com&lt;/A> and the other at <A HREF="http://www.guru3d.com" target="_new">http://www.guru3d.com&lt;/A>. You can get updated nVidia drivers at either site. If you want WHQL drivers I recommend 21.83 because I've had problems (spontaneous reboots) with 23.11. I actually prefer 21.81 because it's a little faster than 21.83 but then 21.81 is not official. Be careful with some of the options of the tweaking utilities. If you get into trouble, both utilities work in Safe Mode. I'd avoid FastWrites and and definitely avoid Sideband Adressing, big stability problems with Via chipsets.

You really should get the Via 4-in-1 drivers installed. I do not recall which is the latest, maybe 4.37. (I'm still using 4.31). Avoid 4.28 and 4.33.

Install the VIA 4in1 drivers and set the AGP miniportdriver during the install to Turbo, if I'm correct AGP 4X will then be enabled.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground   .
