Just bought a GF3Ti200. I have a AthlonXP1600+ with 256mDDR on a MSI Pro2. Before I was running UT with a Voodoo3K at 800x600 with medium detail. The framerate was decent. When I purchased the new video card, I expected to be able to run 1024x768, 32bit, 85hz, and high detail. I tried it and the framerate drops to low 20's and occasionally into the teen's! When I run it in 800x600, the framerate is in th 80-100 range. I made sure anti-aliasing was off.
Does this seem right? Should I be running in OpenGL instead of Direct3D?

Have you got the latest video/chipset drivers? And the latest UT patch and the newest DirectX?
Also check if your AGP speed is set to 4x, and your AGP apertures size is set to 128, this can be found in your BIOS.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground :eek:  .

Ok well for starters 85 Hz is more demanding than 75hz, and not really necessary with UT...

You should be able to run it Extreemly well with that system. What maps are you refering too when these drops occur ? On most CTF maps I average 80-120 FPS and I have a Geforce 2 GTS and PIII 866 !!

For starters you need to be running UT version 436.
You can try both Direct3D and OpenGL, however it is advisable you download this file if you want to use OpenGL:

<A HREF="http://www.rippleit.co.uk/download/opengldrv.zip" target="_new">OpenGL Update</A>

As when the game was released the OpenGL code was still very experimental for the engine and it doesn't perform as well as it should without it !

These are my UnrealTournament.ini settings for OpenGL :

[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
RefreshRate=75
DetailTextures=1
UseTrilinear=1
UseS3TC=0
UseTNT=0
LODBias=0
UseMultiTexture=1
UsePalette=1
UseAlphaPalette=0
Translucency=1
VolumetricLighting=1
ShinySurfaces=1
Coronas=1
HighDetailActors=1
MaxAnisotropy=0
AlwaysMipmap=0
UsePrecache=1
SupportsLazyTextures=0

Replace the section in your UT.ini with that (It is bigger) and it should perform better ! [REMEMBER - Backup your ini incase something goes wrong]

Points to note: Set your Vsync to true in the UT settings to turn it off ! Its back to front for some reason ?

The High detail will punish it ! I run on high textures and medium detail models... this helps my performance and its not really like you get too look at the enemy for too long before you blow them away !! :o )

I personally use OpenGL as I find it performs better (But not by too much) and I think it looks better too. I am not sure why yours is dropping so low ? But expect some drops when a great deal of action is going on.

Thanks.

I simply installed 436 patch for UT, which allowed me to run in OpenGL. What a difference. I forget the exact numbers, but my framerate doesn't drop below 40 even with antialiasing turned on. Direct 3D sucks. Hopefully they figure a way to make it ALOT faster. I heard the newest versions of D3D is faster if a game takes advantage of it.
