What is XFS? - http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/faq.html#whatisxfs

So, what does that mean?

Well, it means that the XFS filesystem has been merged into the 2.4.23 Kernel as a choice for filesystem types...the XFS filesystem is supposedly more stable in that it does not requre fsck (filesystem checks) like the ext2 and ext3 filesystems. It also uses btrees to divide its filesystem with...it was developed and used on SGI IRIX (for large servers).

So I wanted to really know if this is a good thing or bad thing...I needed to know if I should take my gateway and change the filesystem on it...so I look around a bit and found an answer. The article tests all of the Linux Filesystems and compares them. The conclusion? ext3 is still your best bet...but since XFS is in development...there may be plenty of improvement in the future...afterall it does rank in the top three tested.

I always use reiserFS. It's been the fastest in the benchmarks I've seen.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

That was a neat little tidbit...

Not sure I have an opinion either way, I've been using ext3 for a few years and have been happy with it. I should probably play around with some others though, just for good measure...

I wonder if there are filesystem fanboys out there? Gawd that'd be worth a laugh hearing that argument:
"No. VFAT is the bomb! Just wait till it get's updated, then all you ext3fools, Xfsimps, and reiserfs zealots will be eating your words!

VFAT RULEZ!

Subjectively, XFS feels the fastest in my use. I run ext3 on my server in data-mode because I want the safest journalling, and speed isn't a big issue. I don't really like reiserfs due to the hashing algorithms it uses - I just don't feel comfortable with any chance of duplicate hashes being generated (albiet a very small chance). I know XFS is called a development fs, but it's been used on Irix for years, and the Linux port is well past 1.0 status on http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs
