Hello,

I was getting random lockups on my computer so I got a new system.. I got an abit kr7a-raid, athlon xp 1800, and new ram (256 ddr ram), but I used my geforce 2 and nic card ect was left in. So, I thought my random lockups would be gone... NOPE! I only lockup playing games, like CS and Star Fighter. So, I tihnk it is my video card.. what do you think? is there a way to put a stress test on my video card to see if it is causing the problems? Thanks!

Could be like 5391 different problems.
One of them could be outdated/bad drivers...

Other problems could be to hight temps or a to weak powersupply.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground   .

oh yes, I forgot aobut the power supply... I am sure I don't have enough juice. I only have a 300 watt ps to run the following:

2 60 gig ibm desktars raided
1 45 gig hd
1 52x cd
1 20x yamaha burner
athlon xp 1800+
abit kr7a-raid
256 megs of ram
dragon orb 3 fan
2 case fans
1 nic card
1 orinco wireless pcmcia card in a pci adpater slot
1 64 meg agp geforce 2
1 sb live
==========

think that is a tad to much for this PS?

You have a good chance that it is the powersupply, 300W is the lowest recommend, but in your case with so many componenets you need atleast 350W. I would try with a stronger powersupply.

So, you think 400 watt would be good enough?

Yes, that should be enough.

take your nic out and try it. just give it a try. there is a good chance it will fix it. let me know how it goes.

Try this before you spend any money.

Do a clean install of the Via 4-in-1 drivers. Do it like this. Run the installer but instead of installing the components choose the Uninstall option for each one. Don't reboot when prompted but rather run the installer a second time. This time let the components install.

The above usually works for me to return system stability but I suggest reinstalling the video drivers as well.

I am pretty sure it is power because windows always says a device (a cd-rom or hard drive) becomes unplugged and it no longer works (Kinda like when you eject a pcmcia card, that message pops up). I have to shutdown my system to get them both up and running.

I had the same problem. Two systems. PIII 800 Mhz with Radeon LE and my new one an AMD XP 1800+, KR7A mobo, Radeon 8500. I only lockup in games wuch as CS. When I play CS and it locks up I run another game such as Battle Realms or Q3A but those games just give me a blank screen and Windows confirms it as 'not responding'. I think there's one cause that leads to this problem. My videocard must've overheated coz on both my Radeon LE and Radeon 8500 I changed the heatsink and fan to a Thermaltake Blue Orb and Thermaltake Crystal Orb. I think I didn't install the Thermaltake fans properly so it's not cooling the card.
Imma make repairs this weekend and use arctic silver coz I only used thermal pads to stick em...argh
