When I log onto www.windowsupdate.com, a pop-up appears and asks me to
install the ActiveX control "Windows Update". When I click "Install", nothing
happens. And the website can't scan for any available updates. Instead, it
displays an error message that says: "The website has encountered a problem
and cannot display the page you are trying to view." (Error #: 0x8DDD0004) I
don't know what to do??

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x8ddd0004 error

1. Accept the Windows Update ActiveX control when Internet Explorer asks if
you want to download it.

Important: To prevent security attacks, do not download a Windows Update
control if it is not signed by Microsoft, or if Internet Explorer tells you
that the control does not have a valid digital signature.

2. Log on as an administrator for this computer.
a. Click Start
b. Click Control Panel, and then double-click User Accounts.

If you do not have an adminstrator account, ask one of the administrators
listed to create one for you, and then log on using that account to visit
Windows Update.

I already clicked "Install" to download the Windows Update ActiveX
control....but when I do, nothing happens and the window just closes. I don't
think it gets installed. And I'm already logged in as the administrator. I
still can't get it to scan for available updates.

Download Belarc and let it scan your system to see if ActiveX is present
(and if so what version).
