Problem getting Windows updates

I just obtained an IBM Thinkpad 600 that has Windows XP Pro installed. It
has XP1, but when I went to Windows update to try to get XP2 update (and any
others needed) ran into a problem. It spends a few minutes and then says:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view, Options below might help you to solve the problem." And it
shows error 0 X 80072EE2.
I tried the options shown with no help.

Another problem is no sound, something wrong with Crystal WDM audio codec,
says it won't start, or run. Gives error 10 on this.

I have Windows Me on my regular computer and am pretty familiar with it, but
not with XP. Will appreciate any help.

I forgot to mention, I ran the Microsoft validation program, and it showed
that the XP came installed on the computer, or some words to that effect. So
it is not a bootleg version as far as I can determine.

I've seen REAL Firewall appliances that do HTTP session filtering for
download blocking cause that exact type of problem. Are you behind a
firewall that does HTTP session filtering?

You might want to check this site out - it has a number of options

I've seen REAL Firewall appliances that do HTTP session filtering for
download blocking cause that exact type of problem. Are you behind a
firewall that does HTTP session filtering?

Thanks, Leythos, As far as I can tell so far (just got the laptop today) it
doesn't have a seperate firewall, but evidently one is included in XP, as
the dialup (Bellsouth.net) connection on the control panel shows
"firewalled"

It shows that you are using Outlook Express:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1478

There are updates on the Microsoft site to fix that.

You could also download and install Super Gravity Usenet client and not
have to use a hacked email client for Usenet access any more :)

Excuse the top posting, as you said my reply might get snipped. I am doing
this on my regular computer which has Windows Me, and IE6 and OE6. I will
try the Super Gravity Usenet you mentioned. (As you may have guessed, I'm
not very computer savvy).

http://gravity.tbates.org/

You can get Super Gravity from the owner at the above site. It's not a
newer program and it's not great for downloading video/picture files
from Binary groups, but it's the best Usenet reader I've used in more
than 20 years, at least it is to me :)
