www.caiman.us/ is an excellent source of freeware pinball games and
[a lot] more: <http://www.caiman.us/default.asp>

However, Caiman has been down for a couple of days, hopefully it
will be back up soon.

F1 Pinball is a nice 2 player pinball game which is also just
as good as a single player game. I don't know if it fits your
criteria regards to direct X, but it's an excellent freeware
pinball:
