I am running XP Pro with SP2 and having an issue with End Program
IEXPLORER.EXE on reboot or shutdown.

I wanted to try a repair of ie to see if this would correct the problem.

The first thing I tried was this:
With the xp slipstreamed CD in the cdrom
a.. From the Start menu, select Run.
b.. In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between
sfc and /scannow)
c.. Select the OK button.
d.. Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
e.. Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.
I got this popup: Files that are required to run properly must be copied to
the DLL cache. Insert your XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now.
Note that CD was already in the cdrom and had booted up fine.
There are 3 buttons, Retry (fails to work), More Info which says "Possible
reasons are 1. You have inserted the wrong CD or 2. CDrom is not working
functioning. AS noted above, neither of these can be correct.

a.. From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
b.. Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search
Hidden Files and Folders option.
c.. Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also
checked.
d.. In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
e.. In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard
drive that contains the Windows folder.
f.. Click the Search button.
g.. In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in
Windows\Inf folder.
h.. Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
i.. Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.
Again it needed the xp cd which I had in the CD rom. Here is where
confusion started. I did a search on the xp cd and NO ie.inf file was
found. I did find iexplore.exe and installed it.

Is this what I should have done?


Only thing I saw on reboot was that I was asked if I wanted IE to be my
default browser <only browser I use is IE> which I answered yes.

BTW this did NOT fix the End Program issue.

It's likely that a repair installation of IE may not work. The bottom-most
entry on this page is still valid for SP2 IIRC.

Having read and re-read your post I'm not entirely sure that re-installing
IE would do you any good. That's why I included the link for the malware
scan. It is possible that you have malware infesting your PC and another
possible cause would be a poorly writen (albeit well intentioned perhaps)
BHO loaded that could be causing symptoms such as these. The malware
scanning/cleaning link above would be where I'd begin. After that I'd take a
peek to see what you have for Browser Helper Objects loading with IE.

My experience with IE 6 (OE 6) problem stem from a corrupted TCP/IP protocol
stack. I usually run "winsockxpfix.exe" which will reset the stack back to
Microsoft standard TCP/IP protocol stack. If you have installed any other
special protocols (ie: enhanced VPN client protocols not delivered with
XP), then you will need to re-install those protocols/programs.

As far as I know nothing new has been added in the last 6 weeks other than
the latest XP updates. Nothing I could do fixed the problem. The question
I asked was "Did I use the correct procedure to reinstall IE?".

I have fixed the problem for the time being and time will tell if it works.
I had a ghost image that I made on 8/1/05, so I put the ghost image back and
updated XP, the Antivirus and anything else needing updates. So far, so good
as everything is running normal again.

I would just like to know what caused the freaking problem to start with
LOL.
