I have recently built my own PC with an Lian Li PC-7, Abit KR7A Mobo, XP 1800+, NEC 768MB PC2100 DDR RAM, Radeon 8500, Maxtor 60GB ATA133 HDD, Creative SB LIVE! Value.

I immediately wanted to benchmark my system specifically on the graphics part. First time I ran 3DMark2001 I got 4000+ score. It was unbelieveble coz an XP 1800+ with 256 DDR RAM using Radeon 8500 would've gotten 7000+. I found out that apps such sa Norton is runnung in the background and after disabling them I got 7111 score. I wanted 500 more coz I know it can go up more. On Quake III benchmarks I get 150+ FPS on Performance mode on a 1024x768 - 32bit - 72Mhz refresh rate and 130+ FPS on Quality mode with Radeon 8500. I have driver version 6.13.10.3286. I know my FPS can go as high as 177+ but I just don't know what's really wrong. Is it the refresh rate? I re-installed Windows XP and didn't install any other programs yet until I benchmark my graphics card. No programs are running in the background. What is wrong? I hope somebody can give me tips or a simple guide into benchmarking a graphics card.

Thanks

thanks for the tips. My AGP is set to 4X but it's only set to 128MB. I will try 256MB. Will there be a difference if I go to Display Properties and set my OpenGL to "Quality Mode"
or "Performance Mode" or should I just turn off all tweaks and settings?

You'll have to try, I don't know much about Radeon driver settings, but some tweaks may increase performance, while other increase quality.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground   .

I just don't like to run 3DMark2001 for 8 times and tweaking every mode so I can see the differences on every possible tweak combinations..hehe...maybe I'll do it this weekend. thanks a lot though..hoping for 8000+ on my score!
