This is one of the relics from my years at 3DO. I was lucky enough to
snap this up from a pile of stuff Marketing had dumped for giveaways
on the break room table. It's a Panasonic unit that would have been
used in the development of M2 titles. The M2 technology was sold to
Matsushita for $100 million. That money funded the software
incarnation of 3DO, which sadly closed up shop last year.
The M2 never saw the light of day. It would have been a 64 bit system
in the days before the first Playstation- it was that far ahead of its
time. A few working units were made (I know of one complete with
steering wheel!). I haven't been able to dig up hard numbers yet, but
there may be as few as 20 of these on the planet. This unit was built
in July 1996.
This system has a couple of barely visible minor scratches on the
cover and includes some invisible tape, authentic from 3DO. I'll be
happy to remove the tape if you like, but I felt it best to auction
this unit in the exact condition it was used in at 3DO. Unit does
power up; 15V DC power cord NOT included.
Text on lid of system reads:
Panasonic
Development CD-ROM Drive Box
Model No. FZ-DR21
For use with M2 Development System
