Lets face it. Its gonna be a while before we see games that take full advantage of a Geforce 3 or 4. So what is Nvidia thinking? They are sticking (more or less) to their 6 month product cycle. It takes game developers a couple of years to put out a new game. By that time, Nvidia will be 3 generations ahead, if not more.
So here is the dilema. Game developers are not going to implement features that a card cant utilize. So they "dumb down" a game so more of the gaming market can play it. But graphics cards makers are not going to put features on a card only to have no games use the features. Why bother?
Well, Nvidia has bothered. Somebody had to make the first move. Logically, it had to be the graphics card makers. Game makers have to know what features exist before they can program for them. So Nvidia took the brave step of making cards ( well, the refernce designs) for which no games will exist for quite a while. By staying a generation or two ahead of game developers, Nvidia ( and ATI) are ensuring future games will be feature rich and have tons of eye candy.
I rarely applaud any business for anything. But I want to tip my hat to Nvidia, ATI and the companies that make the graphic cards (Visiontek, Leadtek, Asus etc). They are ones making sure our future games wont suck.

I didnt buy my geforce 3 to run next gen games. I mainly bought it to run current games with fsaa and aniso.

The new games will make the gf3 unable to run them with fsaa and aniso, thus the hardcore will upgrade to the gf4.

Point taken. Never-the-less im sure you will appreciate environmental bump mapping, vertex shaders and what not when the games come out.
