Audio/Volume Control

Anyone encountered a "sudden out of the blue one day problem" where you
heard normal audio from your speakers, the volume control icon went missing,
the audio device properties said all codecs etc are working properly, but
the info screen to change anything was all greyed out? I managed to fix by
rolling back my system a few days, but how un-nerving. Is there a VBS fix
for this, or is rolling back the thing to do?

See if you have disable the sound device, in the device manager, or if you
unpick the sound icon on the taskbar.
