Hello all ... this question has come up because I am basically very frustrated with my performance problems. I only have a GF2 mx-400 64MB card (ASUS) and I understand that this card is "average" at best (maybe not even). But, comparing with a friend's system it is safe to say that mine is much more powerful than his (because mine's newer), but yet he achieves overall better performance on the same games I have tried.

I have:
P4 1.9 GHz; 512 MB SDRAM; ASUS P4B motherboard; ASUS v7100Pro mx-400 64MB video card, Intel 845 chipset, Win ME

He has:
Athlon 1000, 256 MB SDRAM, ASUS ?? board; ASUS v7100 mx-200 32MB video card, Chipset unknown; Win 98 SE

I have spoken to some friends and given them the above information, and they told me it's because I'm using Win ME.

So I ask you, the experts, the question. Are my disappointing experiences due to my using Win ME? If I use 98 SE or XP, should get better performance than my friend? I believe I should, but as of now, I definitely am NOT! Please offer any information\advice that you can please.

I appreciate any insight you guys can offer me!

-P

The problem lies not in the card but within your CPU.
You are using what we people here have shunned, the "Configuration of the damned"!!
If you have at least had the dignity to read THG's article about P4+SDRAM, you'd know by know it cripples what is already crippled, and makes it not more than a P4 1.4GHZ, which an Athlon 1GHZ is about enough to beat it. It's sad, I know, but that's Intel and Adds for you. Take my advice, return the CPU, get an AthlonXP+256DDR instead, an AXP 1700+ will be good, and see how yours will fly over his. Also the video card is indeed not good, MXs are bad kids. As for OS, WinME is the crash lord. You go to it, you're more than damned. I had experience a P4 1.7GHZ with 256RDRAM on WinME, each day several blue screens and crashes occured. So Win98, or WinXP will do you more. Personally your P4+SDRAM will feel sluggish on WinXP though.

I'm writing right now from a AMD + Via + Hercules FortissimoII + Nvidia system right now on WinME. I'm not going to lie I've encountered several problems but almost all were driver related (I'll never buy a Hercules soundcard again!). I use this system strictly for gaming, video, emailing, etc. Now WinME has improved since it's initial release, many of the complaints about it were logged from its first few months of release. Many of the issues were driver based and have since been corrected. If your running slow and still believe it's the OS, try disabling as many background programs as possible while gaming or benchmarking. Also, you can disable the system restore to try and squeeze out a couple of extra FPS. Make sure you've updated your drivers and possibly the BIOS.

Did you build the system yourself? It sounds like a prebuilt machine. I dont know why he told you to take it back, most places wont unless there is something wrong with it. And if they do take it back there will be a restocking fee. By the time your done returning it and getting buttrapted on fee's you'd be better off just upgrading the motherboad and Ram. It is true about the P4 getting horribly crippled by SDRam. If the above mentioned fixes dont work then as a last resort go ahead and upgrade your motherboard to a i850 chipset and a couple of sticks of RDRAM.

Blah, Blah Blahh, Blahh, blahh blah blahh, blah blah.
